AIFF is typically used only for Stereo files, because of the extremely high encode rates involved AIFF Stereo files use an encode rate of approx 16 Mbps Multichannel PCM files take up even MORE bandwidth, and are rarely, if ever, used in DVDs for that reason Nonetheless, AIFF files can be used directly in DVD Studio Pro for authoring AIFF is an uncompressed audio format, and requires far more DVD playback bandwidth than compressed formats like Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, or MPEG audio As a consequence, less bandwidth is available for the encoded video, which might compromise the quality of the finished video project AIFF audio files can also create playback problems in DVD players with marginal performance Because of the increased bandwidth requirements, software DVD players in inexpensive PCs and laptop computers may occasionally experience playback difficulties

WAV files are PCM audio files formatted for use on PCs, instead of AIFF as on Macs (see Fig 6-3) The biggest difference between WAV and AIFF is the order in which the bytes of digital data are stored in the file In WAV files, the audio data should be identical to that in the same file in AIFF format WAV files can be easily converted into AIFF files using the QuickTime Pro player You need the Pro Player to enable the File > Export menubar command

Dolby Digital (AC-3)
Dolby Digital is the current Dolby Laboratories name for what we knew earlier as AC-3 files (see Fig 6-4) Dolby Digital bitstreams, encoded using a sophisticated bit-reduction algorithm (that s where the AC-3 comes from), comprise the bulk of audio tracks used in many DVDs today I ll still refer to them here as AC-3 for convenience

AC-3 Streams are usually created at encode rates from 96 kbps (Mono) to 192 kbps (stereo), 384 Kbps (51), and up to 448 Kbps AC-3 Audio is not legal for DVD at rates above 448 Kbps! AC-3 provides advantages by reducing the size of the finished audio file, and by reducing the bandwidth required for playback of audio In fact, it is possible to put 8 AC-3 Stereo programs in less bandwidth than one AIFF stereo audio program AC-3 allows delivery of all audio track configurations from Mono (1/0, Center ) to 51 (3/2 + LFE L, C, R, Ls, Rs, Sub ) The different track configurations are usually identified by use of the logos displayed in Figures 6-5, 6-6, and 6-7, which are available upon a license request from Dolby Labs (Browse wwwdolbycom for information)
