Transfer Your Footage from the Camcorder to the Mac
Earlier we captured video in iMovie using the iSight camera This process is essentially the same, only instead of using the iSight, we re using a DV camcorder, where the video footage has already been recorded and resides on a mini-DV tape: 1 Connect the DV camcorder to the Mac via a FireWire cable with a small male plug on one end for the camera, and a standard FireWire 400 plug for the Mac 2 Turn the DV camcorder to Play mode (sometimes labeled as VTR or VCR mode) 3 Open iMovie HD Select Create a New Project 4 In the Create Project dialog box (refer to Figure 1-29), name the new project DVcamTransfer In other words, name the project something that makes sense for its purpose or content, something that will make sense to you later 5 Select MPEG-4 for the video format This makes the most sense for sending a video to a web service like YouTube Click Create 6 Make sure the camera is on, and connected to the Mac In the iMovie workspace, toggle the mode to the Camera setting 7 Use the Forward, Back, and Play buttons to find your In point for the footage 8 When you re ready, click Import 9 Click the Stop button in the controls when you ve imported your clip Again, we re not so interested right now in making a video (although we did complete a video clip in the section on importing from iSight in iMovie), so we won t bother to drag our clips into the Timeline and then Share to QuickTime (although you can if you want) We ve done what we wanted to do, which was go through the process of transferring video footage from the DV camcorder to the Mac via FireWire The next chapter will deal with what we need to do to make that captured video watchable In other words, we ll be editing our footage It should be pretty easy to understand, since in this chapter you ve just played around with some of the tools you ll be using for editing
