Now please set up your four shots, take the footage, and transfer it to your computer If you need help transferring your footage from whatever capture device you re using (and it doesn t really matter which you use as long as you get the footage in an acceptable digital video format, preferably MP4, MOV, or WMV), refer to 1 and find the most applicable method of completing that transfer With our footage on the computer, we can begin editing Note that we took four separate shots, or clips If they transferred over as one continuous shot, we ll rectify that in the editing software Otherwise, we should have four separate clips ready to be edited The first major section covers editing on the PC using Movie Maker, the second covers editing on either the PC or Mac using QuickTime Pro, and the third covers editing on the Mac using iMovie HD

Be sure to review each clip in the Preview pane
Make a Rough Order of Clips
Working on the PC, have your clips ready as files on your Desktop and then follow these steps: 1 Review each of your clips Load your clips in Movie Maker; you should see your clips in the Collections pane Click a thumbnail in the Collections pane, and watch the preview in the Preview pane to the right See Figure 2-2 2 Drag each clip, in the order of shots (refer to Figure 2-1), into the Timeline pane Once you ve done that, you now have yourself a storyboard, as shown in Figure 2-3 3 With the clips in order, select the first clip in the Storyboard and click the Play icon The Storyboard lets you watch each clip in order in the Preview pane 4 Click Show Timeline (located just above the active Storyboard and shown in Figure 2-4) to switch to the Timeline 5 Expand the Timeline pane so that it shows not just the Video track, but the Audio track as well, as shown in Figure 2-5 Do this by positioning your cursor over the divider between the upper panes and the Timeline pane and clicking and dragging up to expand the Timeline pane

FIGURE 2-3
Movie Maker calls this the Storyboard, but it toggles to become a Timeline as well
Before we deal with the Audio track, we need to do some basic editing on each clip Our first task is to look at each clip to see whether it needs to be edited Most likely, we ll want to cut out some of the beginning and some of the end That is why when we recorded the footage, we began rolling before we started the action Now we have to select an In marker
FIGURE 2-4
The Timeline is used for editing clips

FIGURE 2-5
The Timeline lets you see both Video and Audio tracks
Split and Trim Clips
Don t worry that splitting and clipping footage is going to damage it In this application, it s a nondestructive process In other words, the program automatically keeps an original of your footage Any edits you do to the Timeline won t affect the original, just the clip in the sequence you re working on in the Timeline In the Timeline, select the first clip and preview it Note where you want to first see the action For editing, our goal is to come in late, get out early (See the sidebar of the same title)
Come In Late, Get Out Early
In screenwriting scenes for the movies, there is a basic rule of thumb: come in late, get out early What that means is that there is little need for excess when telling a story If a scene involves a man having a conversation with another person in a hotel room, there is no need, other than artistic, to show the man enter the room, walk across the room, and take a seat before the conversation begins At the other end of the scene, there is no real reason to show the man get up, push his chair in, walk back across the room to the door, open it, and finally close it behind him Rather, the story makes just as much sense if it shows the man knock on the door, cuts to the conversation at the table, and then moves on to the next scene at the end of the conversation Come in late, get out early Remember, though, when you re shooting your video, you want to do the opposite You want excess footage on either end of the video you capture
