Undoubtedly, when viewing the clip, we ll notice that we have extra film at either end of the action that we want to show in the video We have a choice to make We can either split the clip or we can trim it Let s examine each choice Splitting the clip cuts it into two There is an advantage to splitting a clip It gives you two clips instead of one, letting you use either part in other places, without having to go through the trimming process To split a clip, do the following: 1 Either position your cursor in the Timeline ruler above the clip, at the point where you want to split it (see Figure 2-6), or slide the playback in the Preview pane to the position you want to designate as the split point (see Figure 2-7)

Always remember to save incrementally It s at points like this, where you ve done a bit of detailed work, that you might want to do a Save command 2 With the video clip at the correct frame, choose Clip | Split (or press ctrl-l) 3 The Timeline now has two clips where only one was before, as shown in Figure 2-8 Since we don t really need the first part of the clip we split, it makes more sense to just trim the clip to the point where we want the clip to start Here s how to trim a clip: 1 Find the point in the video where you want to insert your In marker by jogging the play slider in the Preview pane (refer to Figure 2-7) Make note of the time code on the bottom right 2 Go back to the Timeline Click the magnifying glass icon so that your trim will be accurate 3 Position your cursor over the left edge of the clip in the Timeline The greater the magnification you use, the better the chance that you ll get an accurate in point 4 With one eye on the Preview pane, put the cursor on the Timeline, and drag the edge of the clip to the right until it reaches the point you want your clip to start See Figure 2-9 5 Release the mouse Your clip is now that much shorter It will begin at the point to which you dragged the edge of the clip Check the Preview to make sure it s correct You ll also notice that the time code in the Preview now starts at 00:00, as shown in Figure 2-10

FIGURE 2-9
Drag the edge to the exact point of your In marker
6 Your clip probably runs a second or so beyond where you d like it to stop If that s so, then simply repeat the previous steps, but instead of dragging the trim edge from the left, use the right side of the clip and drag to the left, thereby shortening the clip, and creating an Out point, as shown in Figure 2-11 When you get the hang of trimming your clips, a whole world of possibilities opens up Note that even though you re trimming or splitting your clips in the Timeline, the clips that live in your Collection, in the Collections pane, remain in their original form, so this is nondestructive editing You re changing an instance of the clip, but not the clip itself
FIGURE 2-10
The time code now says 00:00 because the trim made your In marker the new starting point of the video
