Ripple Edit tools The Roll Edit tool affects two clips that share an edit point or abut each other Using a roll edit means you can simultaneously adjust the Out point of the earlier clip and the In point of the following clip, without changing the overall length of the sequence You re rolling the cut edit one way or the other When you use the Roll Edit tool, the preview in the Canvas shows you both clips at once, so you can fine-tune your adjustments The Ripple Edit tool, on the other hand, adjusts the length of the clip you are editing, and hence the overall length of the sequence It s best to play with these tools to get a good understanding of the finer points they afford you Slip Edit and Slide Edit tools These tools, located on the fifth tool icon, simply enable

Now that you have a basic idea of the tools available, let s move on to what we ll probably spend most of our time doing: making transitions and effects CHAPTER 10: Power Editing Basics: Using Final Cut Express HD
Apply Transitions and Effects
Transitions are very important, as discussed throughout this book The trick to transitions is to keep them simple Sure, you can always go the cheesy route, with page flips, 3-D cubes rotating, and star-shaped irises or wipes, but that stuff is distracting And if it doesn t add anything to your video, it s extra baggage It s visual baggage Keep transitions simple As I mentioned earlier, you can apply transitions automatically with your clips as you overlay or insert them into your sequence through the Edit Overlay, which are the choices that are presented to you (refer to Figure 10-6) as you drag the clip to the Canvas We ll apply transitions to our sequence in a bit Alternatively, you can add your clips to the sequence, as described earlier, and then add transitions and effects Let s take a look at the transitions and effects that we have available to us In the Browser, click the Effects tab, which is where the Video and Audio Transitions and Effects are located, as shown in Figure 10-8 Drill down through the various choices in the Video Transitions bin The most commonly used transitions are found in the Dissolve, Iris, and Wipe folders Again, remember to keep the transitions simple, not distracting Make them fit the content Choose appropriately The best transitions are the ones you don t notice FIGURE 10-8 The Effects panel holds all the transitions and effects
How to Do Everything with Online Video
Applying an effect or transition to your sequence is easy: 1 In the Timeline, place the playhead at an edit point between two clips 2 From the Effects panel in the Browser, select the Cross Dissolve transition 3 Drag the Cross Dissolve transition directly to the Timeline and place it over the edit point so that its icon overlaps both clips 4 To adjust the duration of the transition, double-click its icon The transition appears in the Viewer, as shown in the example in Figure 10-9 5 Place your cursor on one end point or another of the transition and drag it to make it longer or shorter Check the Canvas on the right to see how it looks (The buttons just above the transition can help you to find the center point or end points of the transition) Removing transitions is just as easy as applying them If you want to remove a transition, use the Selection tool to select the transition in the Timeline and then press the DELETE key FIGURE 10-9
