When buying in eBay auctions, if you seem to be running up against the same bidder and losing, or if you find that a competitor often bids on items you want, you can get additional information about him or her for that slight edge

you will know that the seller is new to eBay within the last 30 days If the seller has a Changed ID icon, you know that the user has changed his or her ID from something else within the last 30 days In this case, you ll want to look up the history of the previous ID as well

Find the item for which you are bidding, such as you might find in Figure 3-5, by browsing or searching for an item Click the title to display the View Item page

Click the History link to see a list of bidders The Bid History page is displayed, as shown in Figure 3-6 If the item is highly priced, the bidder s identity will be hidden The amount that causes an item s bidders to be hidden is established by eBay, and varies per country Click the bidder s User ID link to find out additional information

You may notice that a bidder has two bids, one right after the other In this case, the bidder is probably

not bidding against himself or herself Rather, he or she increased the maximum bid after entering an initial bid This causes two bids to be entered in the auction rather than one, even though they are from the same person and there is no higher bid amount This is done when a person enters a higher bid but the highest bidder is not changed, indicating that the current high bidder has a higher maximum proxy bid Figure 3-6: On the Bid History page, you can see who is bidding on an item and how much time is left on the auction
