Sometimes a label describes the purpose or meaning of another component, such as a text field For example, a text field that accepts a name might be preceded by a label that displays Name In this situation, it is also common for the label to display a keyboard mnemonic that acts as a shortcut key that will cause input focus to move to the other component Thus, for the Name field, the mnemonic might be N When a mnemonic has been specified, pressing that key in combination with the ALT key causes input focus to move to the text field To add a mnemonic to a label involves two steps First, you must specify the mnemonic character by calling setDisplayedMnemonic( ) Second, you must link the component that will receive focus with the label by calling setLabelFor( ) Both methods are defined by JLabel The setDisplayedMnemonic( ) method has two versions Here is one of them: void setDisplayedMnemonic(char ch) Here, ch specifies the character that will be shown as a keyboard shortcut Typically, this means that the character is underlined If more than one of the specified characters exist in the label text, then the first occurrence is underlined The character passed via ch can be either upper- or lowercase After you have set the mnemonic, you must link the label with the component that will receive focus when the shortcut key is pressed To do this, use the setLabelFor( ) method: void setLabelFor(Component comp) Here, comp is a reference to the component that will get focus when the mnemonic key is pressed in conjunction with the ALT key
