Another popular customization is to use the corners of a JScrollPane These corners are created when the scroll bars intersect with each other or with the row or column headers These corners can contain any component, such as a label or push button However, be aware of two issues concerning the use of these corners First, the size of the corners depends entirely on the thickness of the scroll bars or the headers Therefore, they are often very small Second, the corners will be visible only if the scroll bars and headers are shown For example, there will be a lower-right corner only if both the horizontal and vertical scroll bars are both shown If you want to put a control in that corner, then the scroll bars will need to remain visible at all times To do this, you will need to set the scroll bar policy, as described shortly To put a component into a corner, call setCorner( ) shown here: void setCorner(String which, Component comp) Here, which specifies which corner It must be one of the following constants defined by the ScrollPaneConstants interface, which is implemented by JScrollPane:

You can set the scroll bar policy used by the scroll pane The scroll bar policy determines when the scroll bars are shown By default, a JScrollPane displays a scroll bar only when it is needed For example, if the information being scrolled is too long for the viewport, a vertical scroll bar is automatically displayed to enable the viewport to be scrolled up and down When the information all fits within the viewport, then no scroll bars are shown Although the default scroll bar policy is appropriate for many scroll panes, it might be a problem when the corners are used, as just described One other point: each scroll bar has its own policy This lets you specify a separate policy for the vertical and the horizontal scroll bar You can specify scroll bar policies when a JScrollPane is created by passing the policy using one of these constructors JScrollPane(int vertSBP, int horizSPB) JScrollPane(Component comp, int vertSBP, int horizSBP)

You can set the scroll bar policies after a scroll pane has been created by calling these methods: void setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(int vertSBP) void setHorizontalScrollBarPolicy(int horizSBP) Here, vertSBP and horizSBP specify the scroll bar policy Although a scroll pane is a good way to handle containers that hold more information than can be displayed at once, there is another option that you may find more appropriate in some cases: JTabbedPane It manages a set of components by linking them with tabs Selecting a tab causes the component associated with that tab to come to the forefront Therefore, using JTabbedPane, you can organize information into panels of related components and then let the user choose which panel to display

Swing
JTable creates, displays, and manages tables of information It is arguably the single most powerful component in the Swing library It is also one of the most challenging to use to its fullest potential because it provides very rich (and sometimes intricate) functionality It also supports many sophisticated customizations That said, JTable is also one of Swing s most important components, especially in enterprise applications, because tables are often used to display database entries Because of the complexity of JTable, two recipes are used to demonstrate it This recipe describes how to create a table that will display information in a tabular form The following recipe shows how to handle table events Like the other Swing components, JTable is packaged inside javaxswing However, many of its support classes and interfaces are found in javaxswingtable A separate package is used because of the large number of interfaces and classes that are related to tables At its core, JTable is conceptually simple It is a component that consists of one or more columns of information At the top of each column is a heading In addition to describing the data in a column, the heading also provides the mechanism by which the user can change the size of a column and change the location of a column within the table The information within the table is contained in cells Each cell has associated with it a cell renderer, which determines how the information is displayed, and a cell editor, which determines how the user edits the information JTable supplies default cell renderers and editors that are suitable for many applications However, it is possible to specify your own custom renderers and editors if desired JTable relies on three models The first is the table model, which is defined by the TableModel interface This model defines those things related to displaying data in a two-dimensional format The second is the table column model, which is represented by TableColumnModel JTable is defined in terms of columns, and it is TableColumnModel that specifies the characteristics of a column These two models are packaged in javaxswingtable The third model is ListSelectionModel It determines how items are selected It is packaged in javaxswing
