Description of Error
An attempt was made to reference a node in a context where it does not exist The DOM implementation does not support the requested type of object or operation Data is specified for a node that does not support data An attempt was made to modify an object where modifications are not allowed An invalid or illegal string was specified A node is used in a different document from the one that created it (and the document doesn t support it)

DOMExceptions (continued)
Knowledge of how exceptions work is not required to learn how to use the DOM interfaces, though more and more implementations are starting to use them For the specific DOMExceptions that can be raised by each DOM method, you should refer to the corresponding interface definition for that method in the W3C specification
The DOM Node Interface
Nodes are a fundamental concept of the DOM (after all, everything in a document is some kind of node), so let s begin by introducing the base interface that provides access to the properties and methods of document nodes The specific types of nodes, such as Document, Element, and so on, all inherit their methods and properties from the base Node interface Following the everything is a node part of the DOM s design philosophy, the Node interface contains all of the methods and properties necessary for basic node manipulation, except for creating new nodes Node creation is handled by the Document interface because all nodes exist only in the context of a containing document
2: How the DOM Represents Structured Documents
It is important to note that even though the Node interface exposes methods and properties for dealing with child nodes, not all nodes in a document may be allowed to have child nodes Calling these methods on a node that does not have child nodes will result in a DOMException being raised Some of the properties exposed in the Node interface are put there for the convenience of the developer, such as nodeName, nodeValue, and attributes These are provided so that the information provided by these properties can be retrieved without having to cast down to the specific node type for a given node It is common in many types of DOM algorithms to have a list of nodes to process, and it may be time consuming and inelegant to have to first determine the node type before being able to access certain parts of its data Placing these properties in the base Node interface, even for nodes that don t contain that particular information, simplifies this process Some of the information provided in the Node interface may be duplicated in derived interfaces, and the derived interfaces themselves may provide additional information that is specific to that node type In some cases, the properties in the Node interface may have no meaning for a particular type of node (for example, a Comment node cannot have attributes) In these instances, that particular property returns null The Node interface has the following IDL definition:
interface Node { // NodeType const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned const unsigned
