This section will focus only on the current, official Xerces-C DOM classes The Xerces-C team is in the process of creating a new interface to the Xerces-C API called IDOM; this interface is still experimental and will therefore not be covered here The Xerces distribution contains some information on this API and some related example code, and interested developers should look there for further information on IDOM

When downloading Xerces, you get to choose whether to install the entire Xerces project, complete with source code, or only the binary distribution files If you re not planning on making any modifications to the source code or building the library for a platform that is not supported by the binary distributions, downloading and using the binary distribution package for your platform is probably the best way to go However, you ll need the source code if you want to build your application for a platform that is not supported by the standard Xerces download Once you ve downloaded Xerces, you will need to unpack the archive file to re-create the Xerces folder structure Figures 6-1 and 6-2 show the Xerces folder structures for the Windows version of the source code and binary distribution packages

Among the directories created by the Xerces unpacking process, those that you will most likely be interested in are doc, Projects, samples, and src If you re using the binary distribution, you won t have the Projects and src directories; instead, you ll see include and lib In the source distribution, the Build directory contains the executable versions of the sample applications, as well as the debug and release builds of the Xerces DLLs This directory isn t included in the source distribution installer; it is built by the compiler when the source code is compiled For the binary distribution package, the bin directory contains the executable DLLs and sample applications, and the lib directory contains the Xerces import libraries that your application links to By default, the Xerces library is built as a dynamic link library (DLL) on Windows This is so that if more than one application needs to use it, each application can use the one copy of the implementation rather than bloating the code by including a statically linked copy in each version The doc directory contains the Xerces documentation The documentation is available in XML, HTML, and PDF formats (except the API documentation, which is available only in HTML)

6: Applications
The Projects directory contains the various projects needed to build the Xerces library for the various platforms on which it is supported Inside this folder, the Win32 directory contains the project files for VisualC++ 60 for building the Windows version of the library The MacOS folder contains the project files for Metrowerks CodeWarrior IDE and Apple ProjectBuilder for MacOS X The samples folder contains the source code and makefiles for all of the sample projects that ship with Xerces There are sample projects showing how to parse files, parse memory buffers, install custom error handlers, create documents, and so on There is also a data directory that contains some XML and DTD files to use with the sample projects The src folder contains the Xerces source code implementation and header files (for the binary distribution package, these files are in the include folder) You won t usually need to view the contents of this folder unless you are making changes to Xerces itself However, you will need to include this directory in your source code via an #include statement in order to compile your application because this is where the compiler will expect to find the declarations for all of the DOM and related utility classes
