Using the TraceConsole
To use the TraceConsole, your script needs to include the TraceConsolejs file, like this:

You also need to make sure that the file TraceConsolehtml is available to the script The code begins by declaring some global variables:

The function openTraceWindow() calls the windowopen() method to create an instance of the console:

You can modify the URL path to the TraceConsole file in this function if you want to store it in a global place When called, a global reference to the trace window is created and stored in the gTraceWin variable Once you ve included the JavaScript source file for the console, you need to create an instance of the console window before you can trace output to it The openTraceWindow() does this for you Once you ve called openTraceWindow(), you can start calling the other tracing functions If at any point your script needs to clear the console window, it can call the clearTrace() function:

The TraceConsole Functions
The TraceConsole provides a set of useful functions for recording several different kinds of variables and objects In addition, the TraceConsole API provides functions that can be used to perform basic performance timing of sections of code, which can help you identify areas to focus on in order to improve performance
Basic Output
The most basic function available in the TraceConsole is traceString() It takes a single string as an argument and writes it out to the console window JavaScript allows you to build strings rather easily using the + operator, so it s simple to write out a string that shows the content of a variable:
var myName = "Joe"; traceString("myName is currently set to " + myName);
Using traceString() is the closest available comparison to using the alert() function because both take string arguments The traceString() function is written as

Sometimes it is useful to trace a whole bunch of variables to the output at once The traceValues() function does this in the TraceConsole It accepts a variable number of arguments and traces them to the output window:

Tracing Complex Objects
The TraceConsole can also be used to trace complex objects to the console window, such as arrays, Document nodes, and generic objects Each object type has a corresponding trace function in the API, such as traceArray(), traceNode(), and traceObject() Listing 7-2 shows the code for the traceArray() function
