Even though the innerHTML property is not part of the official W3C DOM specification, it is supported by both IE 6 and Netscape 6, which makes it safe to use for scripts where you know the code will be used in one of those browsers In addition, it is often more convenient and practical to use this property than it is to manually set each child node of a given parent

If the user decides to cancel editing the item by clicking the Cancel button, the cancelEdit() function resets the innerHTML property of the LI node to the text that was stored in the gOldContent variable when the item was first clicked As in the case of the commitChange() function, this sets the text value of the LI tag, as well as deleting the controls Deleting an item by clicking the Delete button calls the deleteItem() function The function retrieves the node for the edit control, then gets the parent <LI> tag using the parentNode property The script then calls the removeChild() DOM method on the global gTheList variable, using the <LI> tag as the argument This effectively removes the list item along with the editing controls Adding new items to the list is accomplished with the addNewItem() method This function uses the createElement() and createTextNode() DOM methods to make a new <LI> tag, which is appended to the list being edited via the appendChild() method

A few notes about the ListEditingjs script: first, the script does not do any error checking If this script were to be used in a real production environment, it would need to be significantly improved with error checking and handling code, such as ASSERT statements (see 7) Also, the script makes several assumptions about the list being edited, such as that the first child item of each <LI> tag is a text node This may not always be the case, and again, this should be checked for in a production setting

Implementing pop-up menus has always been one of the more complex user interface tasks that web developers have been faced with, usually because making it work across multiple browsers was difficult Using the DOM together with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the task becomes somewhat simpler Figure 9-3 shows a web page with a pop-up menu displayed over a hyperlink

The menu itself is a standard DIV element It starts out invisible in the page and is positioned over the link and made visible when the user clicks the link When the user moves the mouse off the DIV, the menu becomes invisible again Each menu item is a separate anchor tag inside the DIV The anchors have an associated CSS style sheet that changes their appearance when the mouse is moved over them Clicking the item causes the browser to jump to the new URL represented by the link, which may also be a javascript: URL that causes a particular action to occur Let s examine the code that controls the pop-up menu Listing 9-5 shows the code for the document in Figure 9-3

The HTML page defines some styles that are used for the menu items and includes a JavaScript file named Pop-upMenujs, which contains the code that controls the menu behavior The page defines three CSS styles that govern the appearance of the menus The first two, menuItemStyle and menuItemStyle:hover, are defined as class selectors of the <A> tag, so you can assign these styles to the anchor tags inside the DIV that defines the menu In addition, by defining the menuItemStyle:hover style as a :hover pseudostyle for the <A> tag, you get automatic mouse-over functionality When the mouse moves over the <A> tag, the menuItemStyleOver style will be automatically applied and automatically removed when the mouse moves off it The third CSS style, menuStyle, defines the basic appearance for the DIV Its visibility property is initially set to hidden so that the menu will not be visible when the page is first loaded To make the menu visible, the code toggles this setting
