only contents of the cell will be a floating-point number, so extracting it is easy If the text were prepended with a $ sign or some other text, the code would need to strip off the extraneous information to get the price datum (again, probably using a regular expression) The function uses this value to record the highest and lowest prices it finds, and calculates a seven-day average price using the Mathround() function to round the number to two decimal places Once the necessary data has been calculated, the function uses the getElementById() method to retrieve the text field objects and set their contents to the calculated high, low, and average price values

The potential power of client-side data processing becomes even more evident when combined with embedded XML Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator allow XML code fragments to be embedded directly in a web page or referenced from an external XML file DOM applications can use these XML data islands to provide true data-driven web pages entirely on the client browser

There is currently no accepted W3C standard for working with embedded XML in HTML web pages, although Microsoft is working with the W3C to define one There is no word yet on if or when this will be adopted as an official W3C recommendation, but stay tuned

A data island is a section of XML code that is either directly embedded within the web page (called inline XML) or referenced via a separate XML file (called external XML) For example, the following code fragment illustrates an inline XML data island embedded in the body section of an HTML file:

Once XML data has been embedded in a web page, it can be used to generate HTML to present that data For example, the XML data island listed previously might appear in a web page as an HTML table or as the contents of a select list, as shown in Figure 10-5 In this section, you ll examine how to embed XML data in web pages that will work across multiple browsers, and you ll see how to write DOM code to manipulate the XML information and build HTML to display the data Let s begin by taking a look at the XML support currently provided by Internet Explorer 6, which provides robust built-in support for data islands
Data Islands in Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer provides native support for XML data islands, along with several methods for working with them For example, IE allows certain types of HTML elements to be bound to XML data islands for automatic data-driven HTML code generation When the page is viewed in the browser, Internet Explorer automatically populates the HTML element with the data from the associated XML data island In addition, IE supports using XSLT to transform the XML data island into HTML

XML as an HTML select list (left) and as an HTML table (right)

Data islands can be defined in Internet Explorer as either inline or external Inline data islands embed their XML code directly within the page External data islands reference an external XML source, just as an <IMG> tag points to its image source file
Inline Data Islands
To define an inline XML data island in Internet Explorer, your application needs to enclose the XML code within an <XML> tag This XML tag is then assigned a unique ID that can be used to refer to the element throughout the document and bind the island to an HTML element that supports data binding Listing 10-7 shows a sample HTML page with an embedded XML data island, along with an HTML table that uses the data island to populate the table cells
Listing 10-7
