Here s how to create a new Framework Manager project: 1 From the splash screen, click the Create A New Project link If you already closed the splash screen, you can also start by choosing File | New Project, or by clicking the New Project icon on the toolbar 2 Framework Manager pops up the New Project dialog, shown in Figure 15-2 Enter the project name and location Note that the project name and location are linked in this dialog If you change the project name, the end of the location changes, and vice versa This is because the project is composed not just of the cpf file, but the entire project folder in which the cpf file of the same name resides 3 Click OK Once you have clicked OK to the New Project dialog, you will be asked to log on to the Cognos 8 environment, unless your environment is configured to use single signon, in which case you will be authenticated without having to enter you user name and password This login dialog is actually a small web page containing the same login screen that you see when logging into the Cognos Connection portal

When the Metadata Wizard opens, it displays a prompt that asks the users to select the design language for the Project Cognos 8 supports development in a number of languages Next, you must select the metadata source that will be used to provide metadata content for the model, as shown in Figure 15-3 The option at the top of the list, the most common one, is Data Sources, which is what we will be using now Note that you can also use metadata exported from a variety of Cognos applications, such as Impromptu, Data Manager, or another Framework Manager model You can also use metadata from a variety of third-party applications, including some modeling tools and some related or competing BI and data warehousing applications If you are curious, now is a good time to select Third Party Metadata Sources and take a look at the list to see if any apply to you You can always click the back button in the wizard to go back and select Data Source

Architect options allow you to try to preserve any modeling work that you have invested in those older Cognos tools, but beware that the model it imports may not be the preferred way to model within the newer Cognos 8 environment The options to use Data Manager or its predecessor, DecisionStream, allow you to move rather seamlessly from those Cognos data warehousing tools to a model of the data warehouse, or a portion thereof, that they produced This gives you a great head start on a model, complete with a dimensionally modeled relational component, which we will address in the following chapter

Part IV:
Administration of IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence
Start with a Data Source
If you think of the model as a hose, a conduit by which you will allow end users to access data for their reports, you can think of the data source as the spigot to which you must connect the hose IBM Cognos 8 BI models can reference multiple data sources, but for now, we will keep it simple and create our initial model from just one source, which is all the wizard will accommodate at one time anyway When you select the Data Source option, the next dialog in the wizard asks which data source you want to use The list comes from the data sources defined in your Cognos BI Server environment that is, Cognos Connection You can also create a new data source Creating the source here in Framework Manager and creating it in Cognos Connection are equivalent operations In fact, they use the same web interface: the screens you see when creating a new data source from the wizard are the same screens you see when creating the source in Cognos Connection
