Navigate the workspace Use the Contribute panels Use Contribute in Browse mode Use Contribute in Edit mode Set Contribute preferences When you use a new application for the first time, there s bound to be a bit of a learning curve Every application has its own unique nomenclature, buttons, and toolbars Contribute is no exception However, you will find icons and menu commands that bear a striking resemblance to those found in software you already use This is because you use Contribute to perform many of the same tasks you currently perform when creating and editing documents with your word processing software, except you re performing these tasks on Web pages Likewise, when you use Contribute to browse to Web pages, you ll find buttons and windows similar to those found in most popular Web browsers The icons and buttons you have available when using Contribute differ depending on the task for which you re using the software In this chapter, you ll learn what tasks you can accomplish with the available buttons You ll also learn to set Contribute preferences to suit your working style and specify which external file editor is used to edit Web page elements such as images and text documents
Launching the Application
The designers of Contribute have designed the software to be as user friendly as possible Often when applications launch, the user is confronted with a vast array of options, but when you launch Contribute, a welcome screen appears, as shown in Figure 2-1 After the welcome screen appears, you can choose one of the following options: Take a quick tour Of Contribute If you re connected to the Internet, you ll be redirected to Macromedia s Web site where you ll find more information about Contribute Take the Contribute Tutorial This choice launches the Contribute tutorial

Create a connection to a Web site This option launches the Connection Wizard, enabling you to create a connection to a Web site to which you have the proper information Begin editing my Web sites This option opens the home page of your Web site If you use Contribute to edit multiple sites, they will be listed below the menu command Click the name of a Web site to begin editing its pages When you open a Web site for editing, the home page is displayed in Browse mode You can edit the page by clicking the Edit Page button shown in Figure 2-2, or use the site navigation to display another page that you want to edit The Contribute sidebar in Figure 2-2 has been collapsed to display the entire Web page

Navigating the Workspace
The Contribute workspace is divided into two windows: the document window and the sidebar The document window displays the Web page you are viewing or editing The sidebar is composed of two panels: the Pages panel and the How Do I panel shown in Figure 2-3 The interface shown in Figure 2-3 contains several common elements in both Browse and Edit modes You ll find menu command groups across the top of the interface Many of the available commands are also carbon copies of buttons To access a command from a menu group, click the menu command group s name

When you are using Contribute in Browse mode, menu commands pertaining to editing pages are unavailable You can choose commands from the following command groups: File Contains menu commands pertaining to file maintenance, editing pages, creating new pages, publishing pages, and saving pages This menu group also contains commands for setting up pages for printing, saving pages as drafts, and rolling back to a previous version of a page
