When the Internet was in its infancy, Web pages were dark and dreary text-only creations Initially, the Internet was used predominantly by government agencies and industries for displaying and exchanging information As the Internet evolved, companies like CompuServe and Prodigy brought the Internet to the masses In the early days, viewers used crude facsimiles of Web browsers that were capable of displaying text and icons with a limited color palette As computers became more powerful and less expensive, Web sites took advantage of the increased processing power of computers As a result, Web pages became more sophisticated, with full-color images and animations As the Internet became more popular, companies hired professional Web designers to design their sites and take advantage of the latest Web technologies Like everything else in the world, the companies that display their corporate and product information on the Internet are in a constant state of flux As products and services change, Web sites need to be updated The code used to create a Web page can be quite complex, and even the simplest revision to a Web site generally used to require the services of a Web designer The revision timetable was dependent upon the Web designer s workload This all changed with the release of Macromedia Contribute The fact that you have this book in your hands means you want to use Contribute to manage the content of your Web site Whether you already own the software or intend to purchase Contribute in the near future, know that you can use the software to easily manage the content of one or more sites You can use Contribute to change text and images, to create new pages, and much more without having to know HTML, the programming language used to format text and images in an HTML document that is displayed as a page on a Web browser The Contribute workspace shown in Figure 1-1 has a look and feel similar to word processing software You manage the content of your Web pages by following these four steps:

Contribute combines a Web browser and powerful editing features in an easy-to-use interface
online or save a draft of the page for offline editing When you work in Edit mode, you use a toolbar that features icons you are already familiar with from the software you use in your daily work If you re entering or editing text, you can spell check the document before publishing it You can add links, images, and tables to a page
4 Publish the page After you ve modified the page or created a new page,
you can publish the page to your site with the click of a button As the name implies, you use Contribute to contribute or manage content on your Web site If you work in a large organization, you may have several members who are contributing content to a site When this is the case, the Web site administrator sets up site-wide permissions, creates permission groups, and defines other parameters

that can be edited within your Web site If you work in a team environment, you can e-mail a copy of a page revision to other team members for review Contribute also saves previous iterations of a page If you are not satisfied with an edited page, you can use the Rollback (that s Contribute terminology for going back to a past version) feature to revert to a previous iteration of the page The Web site administrator can specify the number of rollbacks available when defining site permissions Another powerful Contribute feature allows team members to check a page in and out When you edit a Web page, contribute checks out in your username; other team members know you are editing it After you finish editing a page, Contribute checks it back in and it s available for editing by other team members This feature prevents another team member from accidentally overwriting the page you are editing Before Macromedia created Contribute, the only alternative to editing a Web page was using a word processor such as Windows Notepad to manually edit the code, or using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editor such as Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage Both of these programs have fairly steep learning curves and require basic knowledge of HTML The nice thing about Contribute is that it gives you all the necessary features to edit your site without destroying the Web designer s work You cannot overwrite the underlying code, and this prevents you from wiping out the Web designer s formatting Another important feature of Contribute is that you are in control You edit the pages according to your schedule instead of trying to squeeze the edits into your designer s schedule Contribute enables you to maintain your Web site and keep the content fresh and up-to-date As I m sure you re well aware, people return to your site if they can be assured they will see new or updated content, not the same material displayed the last time they visited the site
