Sharpening an Image
If someone sends you an image to display on a Web page and the image is a bit fuzzy, you can sharpen the image so it looks better in the published Web page Most image-editing programs have a command called Sharpen When you sharpen an image, the edges of objects are enhanced and the image appears to be clearer To sharpen an image in Paint Shop Pro, follow these steps:
1 Select the image and launch Paint Shop Pro from within Contribute using
one of the methods outlined previously in the section Launching an External Image Editor Alternatively, while in Paint Shop Pro, you can select an image from a folder on your computer
2 Choose Effects | Sharpen | Sharpen You can apply the command as many
times as necessary If the image needs a lot of sharpening, you can choose Effects | Sharpen | Sharpen More to apply a higher level of sharpening to the image

Changing the Resolution of an Image
If you are adding an image to a Web page that has been acquired from a scanner, you re probably working with an image that has a resolution of 200 pixels per inch (ppi) or greater A resolution of 200 ppi is correct if you re going to print the image, but it s more than you need for displaying an image on a Web page An image with a high resolution also has a large file size If you insert an image with a high resolution in a Web page you are editing, the published page will take longer to download than it would with an image that has the proper resolution for the Web The resolution of a computer monitor is 72 pixels per inch, which is the correct resolution for images you edit for your Web pages Many programs give you the option of changing image resolution, while others set image resolution when the image is exported Paint Shop Pro sets image resolution to 72 pixels per inch on export, while with Corel Photo-Paint, you use the Resample command to change image resolution
How Do You Choose the Right Resolution
When you choose a resolution for an image, you match it as closely as possible to the intended display device (such as a PDA screen or computer monitor) or the intended output device (your printer, or the printer that will be used to print the document for which you are editing the image) When you modify the resolution for display as wallpaper on a computer monitor, or for display on a Web page, it s a no-brainer: choose 72 ppi or, at most, 96 ppi You simply don t need any more pixels per inch than that If you re choosing the resolution for an image that will be part of a printed document, consult your printer manual for the maximum print resolution, or contact the staff at the service center; ask them what resolution is correct for their printer and choose that resolution When you change an image s resolution, be sure to choose the image-editing program s resample option as well When the resolution is changed, the image is resampled (resized) to the correct size for the resolution you select For example, if you have an image that is 300 300 pixels and the resolution is 300 ppi, when you change the resolution to 100 ppi, the image is resampled to 100 100 pixels Remember, you can always choose a lower resolution for an image and achieve good results, but when you choose a higher resolution, you re instructing the image-editing software to add pixels where there once were none, and the result is a distorted image
