One of the most basic ways to customize PowerPoint is to use the Options dialog box (Choose Tools | Options) Here, in one place, you can specify many of PowerPoint s features Many people use PowerPoint for months, being frustrated with one feature or another, before discovering that they can change the way the feature works The AutoCorrect dialog box also offers a number of helpful options for creating text

The View tab of the Options dialog box, shown in Figure 13-1, enables you to customize many of the visible features of the PowerPoint screen while you work Most of the items are self-explanatory Here are a few pointers The first check box, Startup Task Pane, displays the Getting Started task pane when you open PowerPoint You can choose whether you want the vertical ruler to appear when you display the horizontal ruler (using View | Rulers) The Windows in Taskbar check box lets you specify whether you want a separate button on the Windows taskbar for each open presentation The second section of the View tab applies only to Slide Show view You can choose to display the shortcut menu when you right-click and display the shortcut menu button in the lower-left corner of the screen You can also choose to end a slide show presentation with a black screen, so that you don t inadvertently show the audience the Normal view of PowerPoint at the end of a presentation Finally, you can choose in which view PowerPoint opens The default is the last view saved

The General tab of the Options dialog box has the following options:

Office, this feature plays a sound when a message opens or at other specific events You can change the sounds played for each event by going to Start | Control Panel and double-clicking Sounds

listed at the bottom of the File menu and on the New Presentation task pane, from zero through nine

PowerPoint links sounds rather than embedding them, in order to avoid very large files The default size is 100KB

A shared workspace is a location, hosted by a web server, where people can share files Shared workspaces are based on a service offered by Microsoft called SharePoint Services For more information, go to http://wwwmicrosoftcom/sharepoint/ teamservices/ The Edit tab of the Options dialog box, shown in Figure 13-2, lets you set some of PowerPoint s general editing features (Some features related to editing text are in the AutoCorrect dialog box, discussed in the next section) Here is what each option does:

the clipboard, you see a small drop-down list next to the pasted material This list lets you decide how you want the pasted material formatted For example, if you are pasting text, you can keep the source formatting, use the design template formatting, or paste only plain text This option lets you decide if you want to see these buttons

Use Smart Cut and Paste You can add or delete spaces before and after pasted text,

some people nuts when they try to select part of a word Uncheck this check box to give yourself more control over selecting text Double-click any word to select it
