Tips on Design and Layout
Graphic designers use many principles that help to create a slide that looks balanced, easy-tounderstand, and professional The following sections discuss several of these principles
Make Text Simple and Consistent
Pay a great deal of attention to consistency and legibility of text As much as possible, stick to the same type family throughout the presentation For example, you might consider using Arial, Arial Bold, Arial Black, and Arial Narrow Don t use more than three fonts Include font styles in your counting, because Times Roman regular and Times Roman italic appear as different fonts to your audience Even different font sizes can sometimes give the impression of a different font Use common sense, and keep it simple Consider the old belt and suspenders principle: you don t want to wear both to hold up your trousers it s either one or the other You don t need to use large type and make it bold The point comes across clearer if you choose one or the other and give your presentation a more homogeneous look The line length of your text should never be more than 45 to 55 characters, including spaces More than that is difficult for audiences to read In most cases, the type will be large enough so that this is not a problem The general principle is to use shorter lines rather than longer lines of text When mixing two different fonts, consider the x-height of the font: the height of the lowercase x as well as of many lowercase letters, such as a, c, and e Two fonts may be the same point size but have different x-heights For example, Garamond has a much smaller x-height than Arial As a result, the entire font looks smaller and is harder to read To compensate, you could increase the font size of the Garamond text Here you see an example of both fonts side by side for comparison
