Choose a Color Scheme
You can imagine that you would not want to use the same color scheme for selling vacation packages to Hawaii as for selling long-term care insurance Even the same presentation might use different color schemes for different situations For example, if a presentation to employees on their employee benefits program is good news, you might use brighter colors compared to the softer colors you would use if the new program represented a cutback To choose a different color scheme, choose Format | Slide Design The Slide Design task pane opens Click Color Schemes to open the Color Scheme task pane shown in Figure 6-1 Note that some templates offer more color scheme options than others

How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
To see the colors in the color scheme more clearly, click the down arrow on any color scheme and choose Show Large Previews As you look at the color schemes, you ll see that the colors in each scheme are related One scheme might feature blues, greens, and grays soft colors while another uses warmer greens, oranges, and browns One color scheme is usually in shades of gray Each color scheme is designed to create an overall impression that applies to your entire presentation To choose a color scheme, click any scheme to apply it to all the slides in your presentation To apply the scheme to selected slides, follow these steps: 1 Select the slides that you want to have the new color scheme 2 Hover the mouse over the color scheme you want to use A drop-down arrow appears 3 Click the drop-down arrow and choose Apply to Selected Slides from the menu, as shown here
Be consistent with color schemes in your presentation If you want to use more than one color scheme, do so only in a limited way For example, if you have four parts to your presentation and each presentation has a slide to introduce the new part, use a different color scheme only for these part slides and perhaps your overall title slide The other slides should then all use the basic color scheme
Factoring in Lighting and Mood
Conventional wisdom is to use a dark background for presentations shown on a screen and a light background for overheads and printed handouts The full truth is more complex In a dark room, dark backgrounds with light text show up well, but in a light room, a dark background appears faded and the light text does not show up as well Instead, use dark text against a light background The purpose of the presentation is another consideration Yellow or white text against a dark background can appear harsh When you want a softer impression or perhaps to convey bad news, use a lighter background A light to medium green or blue with dark text often works well However, be sure that the text contrasts sufficiently with the background for good legibility
