Format Fills in the Dialog Box
Two additional options are available only by using a dialog box For the greatest control, rightclick any object and choose Format AutoShape (or Format Text Box, etc) You ve already seen the Format AutoShape dialog box in Figure 6-11 When you click the Color drop-down box in the Fill section, the color choices are similar to those available on the Drawing toolbar However, one new choice, Background, is now available Choose Background to set the fill to the same color (or effect) as the slide background Be careful, though If your object has no line, it promptly disappears because you can t distinguish it from the background! If you don t like the result, click Undo on the Standard toolbar A special feature for solid and gradient fills applies only for AutoShapes and other objects, not for backgrounds They can be transparent, with a range from 0 percent to 100 percent In the Fill section of the Color and Lines tab of the Format AutoShape dialog box (refer back to Figure 6-11), drag the Transparency slider bar or type a percentage Use transparency if you want objects behind the selected object to show through Your slide background will show through as well Look back to Figure 6-10 to see a slide that uses a 40 percent transparent text box over a picture background The fill makes the text more readable but still lets the beautiful picture background show through It s always a good idea to use the Preview button before clicking OK, although you can undo any change you make If you don t like the result, you can try something else Move the dialog box to see the slide, if necessary

Create 3-D Effects
PowerPoint can create 3-D graphics for you on the fly A simple type of 3-D is shadows, which give the impression that the AutoShape or other object is raised off the slide s surface True 3-D effects are more complex and actually draw a third dimension Both shadows and 3-D effects come with loads of options and settings and can quickly improve the quality of your presentation s graphics
Shadows create a subtle, yet effective 3-D impression You may have noticed that PowerPoint displays slides on your screen with a slight shadow Here you see a slide with several graphics The ones on the left use shadows and look much more three-dimensional than the newsletters on the right
The graphics here were created by scanning the actual documents, inserting them as pictures, and then adding shadow effects, as discussed next To create a shadow, select any object (except text), and use the Shadow button on the Drawing toolbar (To shadow text, use the Text Shadow button on the Formatting toolbar) PowerPoint displays the choices shown in the following illustration Choose No Shadow to eliminate a shadow you have created previously Otherwise, choose any of the options Notice that the options come in groups, which are generally based on four different lighting angles top left, top right, bottom
