Change a 3-D Object s Depth

Change the Direction
When you click the Direction button on the 3-D Settings toolbar, the options shown here pop up The effect of these options is to change the viewer s position relative to the object It s like holding a cube steady and moving your head in one of eight directions That might be hard to do in real life, but in PowerPoint, it s as easy as clicking one of the options
As with other 3-D effects, you should use the same direction for all the objects on a slide If you represent a source of light on a slide, all shadows should recede away from the light At the bottom of the pop-up menu, you have two different view choices Perspective or Parallel In a perspective view, parallel lines in this case, the lines that create the depth of the object converge as they go off into the distance The typical example is railroad tracks appearing to touch in the distance In a parallel view, parallel lines always remain parallel

Set the Lighting Direction and Brightness
When you choose Lighting on the 3-D Settings toolbar, PowerPoint opens the pop-up menu shown here At the center is a cube that represents your 3-D object The current lighting is depressed, and the cube shows the result Without clicking, move your mouse cursor from light to light and watch the difference on the cube Click when you like what you see At the bottom, you have three brightness options: Bright, Normal, and Dim
If you include shadows on the same slide with a 3-D object, you might want to coordinate the two If the light on your 3-D object is coming from the right, sides facing left will be darker Shadows will be thrown to the left as well
