to specify how many seconds wait you want after the previous animation You do this by setting the timing of the effect To set the timing of an effect, select the object whose timing you want to specify You now see the effect also bordered in the animation listing in the Custom Animation task pane with a down arrow next to it (Refer back to Figure 9-3) Click the down arrow to display a menu, shown here

The Timing tab of the Spin dialog box lets you set the timing of the Spin animation effect Similar dialog boxes let you set the timing of all the other animation effects
How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
Speed You can set the speed of the animation itself, from very slow to very fast Repeat You can specify the number of repetitions You can also choose to repeat the
animation until the next mouse click or until the next slide To return the object to its original condition or setting, check the Rewind When Done Playing check box You can create a trigger, which means that when you click another object (the trigger), the animation starts For example, you could click a circle to turn a star purple, using the Change Fill Color emphasis effect To create a trigger object, click Triggers on the Timing tab of the dialog box and choose Start Effect on Click Of Then use the drop-down list to select one of the objects on your slide Click OK when you have finished setting the timing A triggered animation displays the icon shown here
Add a Sound, Dim Objects, and Set Text Options
To specify settings for an animation not related to timing, select the animated object and click its drop-down arrow in the Custom Animation task pane s listing Choose Effect Options to open the Effect tab of the dialog box for the particular animation you have set, as shown in Figure 9-6 The Settings section of the dialog box is available for only certain effects As shown in Figure 9-6, the Spin animation effect offers you the opportunity to specify the amount of the spin and whether the spin is clockwise or counterclockwise A number of animation effects let you create a smooth start and smooth end, by checking the appropriate check boxes in the dialog box A smooth start slows the acceleration of the effect and a smooth end slows its deceleration Check Auto-reverse to play the effect backward after it has finished, doubling the total time of the effect
FIGURE 9-6
The Effect tab of the Spin dialog box lets you refine the Spin animation effect Similar dialog boxes let you specify settings of all the other animation effects
CHAPTER 9: Add Animation to a Presentation
The Enhancements section of the dialog box for each effect lets you do the following:
Add sound Dim the object after animation Animate text all at once, by word, or by letter
Sound is especially useful for presentations that run automatically, without a presenter, such as presentations used at kiosks and trade shows 10 explains how to add music, CD soundtracks, and narration to a presentation PowerPoint comes with a few sound effects, such as applause, a drum roll, or a cash register These sounds tend to have a humorous effect, which is fine if that s what you want For a presentation given by a real person, sound effects tend to distract from the presenter They can also be annoying The first and last slides are two places where sound can be useful For example, you might want music to be playing as the audience trickles in before the presentation or as they leave after the last slide (if you won t be taking questions) A drum roll on the first slide can get your audience s attention in a humorous way but leave it at that PowerPoint can play any WAV sound file attached to a transition or animation effect Use the Windows Find feature (Start | Find | Files or Folders) to search for WAV files on your hard disk or network To add a sound to an animation, use the Sound drop-down list on the Effect tab of the animation dialog box (See Figure 9-6) Choose Other Sound to search for sound files on your hard disk or network When you have chosen a sound, click OK to close the animation dialog box Dimming text after animation is especially effective in focusing your audience s attention on the current point You can dim to a lighter color, hide the object completely immediately after the animation (which doesn t leave it on the screen for very long), or hide it on the next mouse click Just as your audience can wander ahead of you when all the text is visible at once, your audience may start thinking about the points you just finished if they are still clearly visible on the slide While bulleted text is most often dimmed, you can also dim other objects on a slide, such as AutoShapes Dim to a softer, lighter color to emphasize your current point so that the previous items are still visible enough to discuss if someone in the audience asks a question about a previous point Don t dim when your slide contains an entire process that your audience needs to see as a whole To dim an object, click the After Animation drop-down list on the Effect tab and use the menu shown here Choose a dimming color or one of the hide options After Animation or On Next Mouse Click Then click OK
