OVERHEAD WIRING
Overhead wiring is a common means of getting cable from one point to another when working outdoors Running cable overhead is less expensive, usually, than burying cable Yet, most contractors agree that an underground installation is safer If you are going to run exterior cable overhead, you will have to be aware of the height requirements For example, if you are running cable over a sidewalk or a platform and the cable carries a maximum of 150 volts to ground, the cable must be at least 10 feet above the sidewalk or platform Depending on the maximum voltage and the type of use under the cable, the height requirement increases If you are installing exterior cable that has a maximum of 300 volts to ground over a home, a driveway, or non-commercial traffic, the minimum height from the ground to the cable is 12 feet (Figures 31, 32) A cable that carries voltage of 300-600 volts requires a clearance of 15 feet from the ground when it is run outside and over public streets, alleys, and roads that do not have truck traffic When public streets, alleys, roads that have truck traffic, and nonresidential driveways must be crossed by exterior cable that carries a maximum of 600 volts, the cable must have a minimum clearance of 18 feet from the ground
