stitute soap, oil, or grease as a lubricant These materials can degrade the sheathing and installation of wires Use only approved lubricants for pulling wires (Figure 1113) You can buy wire lube in quart cans or five gallon pails The lube is also available in quart squeeze bottles and aerosol cans The wax-like lube is very slippery and distributes easily over wires If you will be pulling long lengths of wire, your work will be much easier if you apply wire lube prior to pulling the wire

TROUBLESHOOTING AND REPAIRS
chapter
ood troubleshooting skills are very important for electricians who do service and repair work Electricians who specialize in new construction may not need to be terribly concerned with troubleshooting skills However, many electricians specialize in service and repair work There are also many electricians who are generalists and who need strong troubleshooting skills to make a good living Electricians who do service work and who don t understand the importance of troubleshooting skills are likely to make a bad impression on their customers This is a good way to lose business Bumbling around with a hit-or-miss procedure won t cut it in the professional world No, you have to be systematic in your search for the cause of a problem Troubleshooting skills develop with experience, but you can jumpstart your skills by learning from others Working closely with a seasoned pro who is willing to share techniques with you is the best way to pick up superior troubleshooting skills The earn-while-you-learn plan works, but it can take a considerable amount of time to hone your skills Reading is a very effective way to perfect troubleshooting skills, and that is why you are reading this chapter

PLUGS AND CORDS
Plugs and cords are small and may seem insignificant, but plugs and cords are a major cause of electrical shocks and fire hazards These devices can be inspected for loose wires, damaged connections, compromised insulation, and brittle prongs These are simple inspections to perform If a plug is defective or a connection is risky, you can simply replace the existing plug at minimal expense This may not sound like much of a job for a licensed electrician, but even simple repairs are important
Replacing Round Plugs
Replacing round plugs is simple There are only five steps involved in the job The first step is to cut the old plug off the cord Remove the deadfront cover from the prong end of the new plug Slide the cord through the plug and strip off about 3 inches of the sheathing Then strip about 1 2 inch of the wire insulation This next step is a bit of a trick of the trade Tie a knot in the two wires where the insulation remains This will keep the wire from being pulled out of the plug if the cord is tugged on Bend clockwise hooks in the ends of the bare wire Secure the black wire under the brass screw and then secure the white screw under the remaining screw Replace the deadfront cover and make sure that all wires and strands are completely concealed in the plug and under the deadfront cover That s all there is to it
