The nice part about linking a source and a target is the fact that the updates from the source to the target don t have to be automatic If you want to control the updates, use the Links dialog box (see Figure 2-10) that appears when you choose Edit | Links in the target file You can use this dialog box to update your target file only when you want updates to occur You can update at any time, even if you initially don t update the target file, but later want to Why not update You might need the file to remain in an out-of-sync state, perhaps to print out last week s version before this week s changes are inserted You can protect the target until you re ready

A link between source and target files remains intact until you perform one of the following actions:
Delete one or both of the files Rename one or both of the files
FIGURE 2-10
You can manage your links and update them when it suits you through the Links dialog box
CHAPTER 2: Common Office Features
Move one or both of the files to another drive or folder Use the Links dialog box to sever the link intentionally
The fact that deleting one or both of the linked files can sever the link requires no explanation, of course, but why does renaming or moving break the link Because the link is based on a path from the source to the target If you rename or move the file, the path becomes invalid It would be like changing the numbers on the front of your house or mailbox and then expecting someone with your old address to be able to find your house If you actually moved to a new house, finding you would be even more difficult If you do accidentally delete or rename a file, you can reestablish the link by repeating the process of building the link through the Paste Special command Just go back to the source file, select the content, copy it to the Clipboard, and then use Paste Special to insert it into the target file Remember to use the Paste Link option and select the object type from the As list, as described previously in this chapter To sever the link between source and target on purpose, you can go to the target file and choose Edit | Links In the resulting dialog box, click the Break Link button A prompt will ask you to confirm your intention to break the link
