Transforming Patterns
When you find or create a pattern you like, occasionally that pattern needs a little tweaking in size, rotation, direction, and angle before it looks the way you want it to In those times, turn to the Scale, Rotate, Reflect, and Shear tool dialog boxes Of course, you can use the tools without the dialog boxes, but when you do double-click the tools to open their dialog boxes, you ll get the added option of choosing whether the transformation is applied to the pattern fill, to the object, or to both at the same time Take a look at the patterns in Figure 12-7 The first one has been rotated 30 , the second has been reflected horizontally, the third has been reduced in scale by 75%, and the last has been sheared by a 20 angle along the horizontal axis

Once you manipulate a pattern inside a shape, all other patterns applied to the same object or new objects will have the same transformations applied to them To reset the pattern inside any object, set the fill to none or fill it with a solid color You may then reselect a pattern and that pattern will return to its original state
Gradients
A gradient is a blend of two or more colors (up to a maximum of 32 colors) that can be applied to the fill of any shape Gradients can use any combination of process colors and spot colors, and the midpoints between any two colors can be adjusted to control how one color blends into the next Furthermore, you can create gradients that are either linear (from end to end) or radial (from center to outside), which means that once you select your colors you can create two unique gradient swatches from them one linear and one radial Use any of Illustrator s free gradients in the gradient libraries, or create your own custom gradients using the tools on the Gradient panel In CS4, you can even edit gradients applied to objects directly on the artboard using the new Gradient widget

Applying Gradients
To apply a gradient to your artwork, select the object(s) and then choose a gradient from the Swatches panel or any of the floating gradient libraries Alternatively, you can drag and drop a gradient swatch from the Swatches panel directly onto an object on your artboard as well as drag and drop the Gradient Fill icon from the Gradient panel onto an object on your artboard
