3 Choose the desired settings in the dialog box To preview your object before accepting the Extrude & Bevel effect, click the Preview box Click the More Options button to see a full set of 3D options: Position Determines your object s rotation and perspective Run through each of the options to see how the 3D preview cube changes Set the x, y, and z coordinates between 180 and 180 if you know them, or click and drag on the 3D cube until your object looks right If desired, adjust the perspective percentage Extrude & Bevel Sets your object s extrude depth, cap, and bevel Revolve Sets your object s angle (number of degrees to revolve between 0 and 360), cap (solid or hollow), offset (distance between the revolve axis and path), and from left or right edge as the axis Surface Adds a surface texture to your object, from matte to shiny Options include Wireframe, No Shading, Diffuse Shading, and Plastic Shading Select Plastic Shading for the most realistic 3D effect Lighting Applies lighting to your object as well as alters the object s shading color Click the light icon on the lighting sphere to reposition the lighting Click the New Light button to add additional light sources or the Delete Light button to remove unwanted selected light sources The default shading color is black, but you can change it to any color in your Swatches panel by selecting Custom from the Shading Color menu 4 To map symbol art to the surfaces of your 3D object, click the Map Art button In the Map Art dialog box, select a symbol from the Symbol dropdown menu for each of the object s surfaces Click the Next and Previous Surface buttons to toggle between the object s different surfaces, which will be outlined in red to assist you in selecting the right symbols for each surface To shade the artwork with a shading color, click the Shade Artwork option When finished, click the OK button

Integrating Illustrator Symbols with Flash
Since Illustrator CS3, Illustrator s symbols have worked identically to symbols in Flash, making the process of sharing artwork between the two programs a snap, so long as you prepare your symbols in Illustrator to work properly with Flash This can be done in the Symbol Options dialog box as you create each symbol, or later as part of a pre-flight workflow before importing or exporting symbols into Flash To set your symbols for Flash integration, double-click a symbol in the Symbols panel to open the Symbol Options dialog box Start by giving your symbol a name, such as Button or Cloud, and then setting the symbol type to MovieClip You can reset this later in Flash if needed Set the Flash Registration for the symbol using the registration icon Click the square in the registration grid that best represents the area of the symbol you want to use as its registration mark, such as the top left edge or in the very center If you plan on creating a symbol that is scalable, check the Enable Guides For 9-Slice Scaling option to ensure that your symbols scale properly along with the movie clips
To learn more about 9-slice scaling in Flash, see Flash Help You might also find it useful to watch the video about working with Illustrator, Fireworks, and Flash at wwwadobecom/go/vid0205 Another step you ll want to take before you send your Illustrator artwork to Flash is to name all the instances of your symbols on the artboard You can do this by selecting each instance on your artboard and adding an instance name in the Instance Name field on the Control panel The last thing you may want to do is set up all your symbol instances on separate, named layers, such as Landscape, Clouds, Trees, Birds, and so on When you do this, Flash will preserve your layers when you use the importing and exporting processes described in the following subsections After you ve created your symbols and named all the instances in Illustrator, you have three options for how to get those symbols into Flash You can copy and paste symbols from Illustrator into Flash, export your files in SWF format, or import your AI file into Flash, preserving layers, symbols, symbol instance names, and more
