Scatter and pie graphs require slightly different data input in the Graph Data window With scatter graphs, you re plotting comparative data from two or more groups at points along the x/y axis Therefore, enter your data-set labels in every other cell along the top row, add your y-axis data in the first column, and put your x-axis data in the second column Repeat this process for each data set, as shown in Figure 14-4 With your pie graphs, if you d like chart key labels to appear above or alongside the graph, you ll add your data-set category labels across the top row, starting at the left-most cell If you d also like to add labels to appear along the bottom of the chart, enter value labels along the left column For a single pie graph, place your category data below each label using all positive or negative numbers, like the example in Figure 14-5 To create multiple pie graphs, all you need to do is plot additional rows of data below the first row Continue selecting cells and entering data as needed Use the TAB key after inputting data to select the next cell in the same row To input entered data and move to the cell below in the same column, press the ENTER (Win) or RETURN (Mac) key Alternatively, you can use the ARROW keys to maneuver to the desired cell location Keep in mind that each graph type requires your data be entered differently in the row and column cells, which can be a bit confusing at first Use the dialog box buttons to assist you with sorting and displaying data: Import data Opens a dialog box to select and import data from a tabdelimited text file (see the next section for details on importing data) Transpose row/column Flips the data from rows to columns and vice versa

Importing Spreadsheet Data
When importing data from a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3, you can input your information in two ways: Copy your data from your spreadsheet program, select the top left cell of the Graph Data window, and paste your data into it using the Edit | Paste command, or alternatively by pressing CTRL+V (Win) or CMD+V (Mac) Export your spreadsheet program data as a tabdelimited text file, where each row of data is separated by a paragraph return Data in this format should only include decimal points (like 23000) but not any decimal commas (as in 23,000) When the text file is ready, click the Graph Data window s Import Data button to select and import that text file After your data is in place, click the Apply button to see how your data is revealed in your graph If needed, use the Graph Data window buttons (as described earlier), make edits, and continue entering data until everything looks right When you re finished, click the Close button on the dialog box Congratulations! You ve just created your first graph! At this point, you can leave the graph as is, change the graph type, update graph data, and customize the graph colors
