n Illustrator, a blend is the resulting set of shapes created between any two or more objects connected with the Blend tool As amazing as this tool is, blending is a much overlooked feature of Illustrator Blends can create tween or step graphics between any two or more lines, shapes, and even text, of any size and color Plus, you can use the Blend command to have Illustrator do math for you when you need a specific number of evenly spaced duplicate objects Not only that, because blends are live effects, you can edit the stroke and fill colors of the key objects, redraw the spine connecting the shapes, reverse the spine, and even expand the blend to create individual unique shapes from the blend Consider this chapter your crash course on all things blendy

When you re ready to create a blend between two or more key objects, use the Blend tool or the Blend command (Object | Blend | Make) You can create three different kinds of blends, as illustrated in Figure 15-1, each of which distributes shape and blend colors evenly between the key objects

Use the Blend Command
To create a blend with the Blend command instead of using the Blend tool, select two or more key objects on your artboard, and then choose Object | Blend | Make When you use this command, Illustrator decides where within each key object the blend should occur
The Blend Tool
Blends created from two or more key objects with the Blend tool result in a series of stepped paths where the shapes in the middle of the blend (including their stroke and fill A attributes) are morphed To create a blend with the Blend tool, follow these steps: 1 Position your key objects where you d like them on the artboard 2 Select the Blend tool from the Tools panel 3 Click the fill or edge of the first object and then click the fill or edge of the second object to create the blend To add additional key objects, simply click the fill or edge of the next object As the blend is generated, Illustrator draws a spine between the key objects
C FIGURE 15-1 Create (A) Smooth Color, (B) Specified Steps, and (C) Specified Distance blends with the Blend tool
Did You Know
Where You Click Changes the Blend
Where you click each key object helps determine the shape and rotation of the blend For example, the first set of objects in Figure 15-2 were blended from their top left corners, whereas with the second set of objects, the first object was clicked at the top right corner and the second object was clicked at the bottom left, creating an obvious rotation of the blended shapes between the two key objects
CHAPTER 15:
Blend created when both objects were clicked at top left corners
Creating Blends
Blend Options
Blends will automatically be created using the lastused blend style as specified in the Blend Options dialog box To change the blend type from one style to another, select the blended objects on your artboard and choose a different blend style from the Blend Options dialog box To open the Blend Options dialog box, double-click the Blend tool on the Tools panel or choose Object | Blend | Blend Options Here s an overview of the different blend options:
Blend created when first object clicked at top right corner and second object clicked at bottom left corner FIGURE 15-2 Where you click objects with the Blend tool establishes the rotation of the blend
Smooth Color Makes a smooth blend that uses as many steps as needed to smoothly blend shape and color between the key objects Specified Steps Makes blends that morph the shape and color of the key objects over a specified number of steps, like 254 for a super smooth blend, or 8 for a clearly banded groovy 1970s-style blend Specified Distance Makes blends that morph the shape and color of the key objects over a specified distance using any unit of measure, such as 1 in or 10 pt Align to Page Sets the orientation of the blend to the x axis of the page, as shown in the example in Figure 15-3 Align to Path Shifts the orientation of the blend from the page to the path, or spine, of the blend (see Figure 15-3)
If you press and hold the ALT (Win) or OPTION (Mac) key as you click the second key object with the Blend tool, the Blend Options dialog box will open so you can modify the blend s style and orientation before it gets added to your artboard
