Faux Styles
Sometimes a font style that you have in mind does not appear in the list This is because you don t have that particular font installed, or it s just not available In either case, Photoshop will allow you to fake it These styles are called faux styles, and you can create them by clicking the little buttons
FIGURE 8-4 The font menu
CHAPTER 8: Create and Manipulate Text
(see Figure 8-2) on the Characters palette to apply a simulated style to the text
Bold
Thicker text Displays each character in capital letters
Italic Skewed text All Caps Small Caps Displays each letter a little smaller than the regular caps line, such as the squared sign in math: 22 structure in chemical notations: H20
Superscript Raises smaller text to the top of the text Subscript Lowers the small text, such as the molecular Underline A line appears along the baseline of the text Strikethrough A line appears through the text itself
Color
What a cruel and ruthless world it would be if our favorite image-editing program allowed us to produce text only in black As luck would have it, Photoshop s designers have included the ability to colorize text right in the Character palette and options bar Whenever you see a colored rectangle in a Photoshop tool, it s probably a link to a Color Picker; in the case of the Character palette, the word Color appears next to this rectangle The text Color Pickers work just like the other Color Pickers in Photoshop: click it, and a window will appear with lots of colors Choose a color and click OK To change the color of your text, click the Type tool and highlight the text you want to colorize You can even highlight a character and make it a different color from the rest of the text to create a rainbow of text colors (This is not recommended for most design purposes, however)
Using Advanced Character Formatting
You might want to tweak a bit more than the font, color, and size, and for that, you again use the Character palette (In fact, all of the options we are about to discuss are available from the Character palette)
How to Do Everything with Photoshop CS2
Figure 8-5 shows an example of the effect of each of these adjustments These formatting options are applied just like the standard formatting options (unless specified otherwise)
Kerning Adjusts the
space between pairs of characters To increase or reduce the kerning, insert the I-beam cursor between two characters and press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW keys on your keyboard while holding down the ALT (OPTION on the Mac) key, or you can enter a setting directly into the Kerning text field in the Character palette Pay special attention to the spacing between capital and lowercase characters, as they often need a little kerning between characters in a word or series of words
Tracking Adjusts the overall spacing that appears Leading Adjusts the space between lines of text The
default setting is Auto (two points larger than character size), and this works for most cases To change the leading, highlight the lines of text that you want to alter, and then enter a setting into the Leading field in the Character palette (Leading isn t shown in Figure 8-5 because it doesn t have an effect on single lines of text it affects two or more lines only) the text horizontally Use this feature sparingly, because text was designed to look best at the default proportions If you are trying to fill space, you are much better off adjusting the tracking instead on the vertical instead Similar warning goes here: consider leading first
