DVD-RAM is the best suited of the writable DVD formats for use in computers because of its hardware-based defect management, zoned CLV format for rapid access, and high number of rewrites DVD-RAM is also intended for consumer audio and video recording A major difference between DVD-RAM and all other physical DVD formats is that embossed headers are used to identify the physical sectors The address used by the drive to read or write sectors is the physical address, not the logical sector number Because of this difference, along with low reflectivity, tracking changes for land and groove recording, modified access control for zoned CLV, defect management, and a different starting location of the data area, DVD-RAM discs cannot be read by DVD drives and players built before 1998, as well as many built since then Defect management is handled automatically by the drive Two replacement methods are used Slipping replacement is used first, where a defective physical sector is replaced by the first nondefective following physical sector The primary defect list (PDL) records information about defective sectors found during manufacturing, as well as those found during later formatting The PDL can only be changed by re-formatting The number of sectors in a group to be listed in the PDL shall not exceed the number of sectors in the spare area in that group Linear replacement is the second defect-management method, where a defective physical sector causes the containing ECC block (16 sectors) to be replaced by a block of sectors from a spare area Defective sector blocks are listed in the secondary defect list (SDL) recorded on the disc DVD-RAM defines two types of spare areas from which to allocate replacement sectors The primary spare area (PSA), consisting of 12,800 sectors, is preassigned during formatting The supplementary spare area (SSA) is also assigned during formatting but can be expanded later The supplementary spare area can range from 0 to 97,792 sectors Once the primary spare area is used up, the supplementary spare area is used and enlarged as needed Slipping replacement is quick because defective sectors are replaced by nearby sectors Linear replacement is slower because it requires a head seek operation to get to the spare area to write or read the replacement block However, linear replacement is the only way to handle defects during recording without formatting the media Each time a data sector is overwritten, the recording start position is randomly shifted by 0 to 15 channel bits, and the lengths of the guard fields are changed by 0 to 7 bytes to accommodate This random placement of the data keeps the recording surface from being stressed when the same data is written multiple times

DVD-RAM media comes preformatted A disc can be re-formatted to erase the contents and to reorganize defect-management information for better performance A full format which takes about an hour verifies and initializes each sector, clears all but the manufacturer defect information from the primary defect list, and creates new spare areas A quick improvement format which takes only seconds changes linear replacement sectors to slipped sectors No data is erased A quick clearing format which takes only seconds initializes the media for use, by clearing the PDL, as with full formatting, but without testing any sectors All data on the disc is erased Version 10 defined zoned formatting, which performs the equivalent of a quick clearing format to a single zone, erasing only the data in the zone In order to protect the media and make recording more reliable, DVD-RAM media usually comes in cartridges Once the disc is written, it can be removed from the cartridge to be used in standard drives and players There are three types of cartridges: type 1 is sealed, type 2 allows the disc to be removed and reinserted, and type 3 is an empty cartridge that a disc can be inserted into for more writing Single-sided DVD-RAM discs come with or without cartridges Double-sided DVDRAM discs are only available in sealed type 1 cartridges Special cartridges are available for 80-millimeter DVD-RAM; the two-part cartridge includes a disc holder that makes it easy to put the disc in and take it out without touching the recording surface Adapter cartridges let 80-millimeter cartridges be used in recorders that only accept 120millimeter cartridges Standard cartridge dimensions are 1246 1355 80 millimeters (Figure 56) Information placed in the embossed lead-in area on the disc specifies if it can be written without a cartridge If the field is set to 00h, the recorder will not write to the disc unless it is mounted in a cartridge Cartridges have write-inhibit holes If the hole is open, the recorder will not write on the disc A write-inhibit flag (in version 20 only) can be set or cleared by the recorder If the flag is set, the recorder will not write on the disc Each cartridge also has a sensor hole that indicates if the disc has been taken out at least once If the sensor hole indicates that the disc has been removed, the recorder may reject certain operations, such as writing with verification turned off The DVD-RAM 10 format is standardized in ECMA-272 and ECMA273 DVD-RAM 10 drives were able to read older 650-MB PD discs5 Compatibility with PD media was dropped in version 20 drives DVD-RAM 20 drives can read and write 10 media
