Work with Numbered Lists
For a simple numbered list, click Numbered List on the Control panel to apply numbers, or press ALT-CLICK Numbered List to open the dialog box and choose from default settings, such as the number s appearance and spacing characters Numbers are usually more complex than bullets, and can be used in multiple configurations Before you can add several list levels, such as numbered lists with a set of lettered sublists, you need to define the lists A defined list is the key to more complex bullet and numbering features, letting you interrupt one list with another list or other content producing a layout like this book By defining multiple lists, you can interrupt one list with another and maintain number sequences in each list To define a list, choose Type | Bulleted and Numbered Lists | Define Lists to open the dialog box Click New in the Define Lists dialog box to open the New List dialog box, and type a name for the list
How to Do Everything: Adobe InDesign CS4
Two criteria are selected by default Select whether to continue numbers across stories and/or to continue numbers from previous documents, specify if you re working in a book format, and click OK to close the dialog box Click OK again to close the Define Lists dialog box A numbered list imported from Microsoft Word automatically defines a list
Apply Numbering to a List
To number a list, select the text and press ALT as you click the Numbered List button on the Control panel to open the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (see Figure 8-2) Follow these guidelines to choose number settings: 1 Specify the list type and select a list name The initial numbering level can use the Default list 2 Choose styling for the number The Mode options define where to start numbering (refer to the next section for details) 3 Specify number position using the same options as those shown in Figure 8-1 for configuring bullets 4 Click OK to close the dialog box and apply the numbering
FIGURE 8-2 Specify settings for number types and styles
Restart or Continue Numbering for a List
Whether a single or multilevel list, you can revise numbering at any time, or you can continue numbering a list following insertion of other sorts of content Place the Text tool insertion point where you want to make a change, and choose the relevant command from the shortcut menu Restart Numbering Choose this command to renumber the list from 1 or A in a regular list or from the first lowerlevel number in a multilevel list, as shown here
