There are two ways to get high-fidelity sound from a Media Center PC to speakers If you re connecting a Media Center PC to a pre-existing entertainment center, you may already own a digital receiver A digital receiver takes sound encoded in a particular format (such as one of the many Dolby formats: Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, etc) and decodes it, sending the appropriate audio channels to the correct speakers You can use the S/PDIF output on your Media Center PC to input sound to your digital receiver S/PDIF stands for Sony/Phillips Digital Interconnect Format The S/PDIF output connector is usually black and the S/PDIF input connector is pink To use S/PDIF output for audio output on your Media Center PC, you must configure Windows Vista to use it as the default sound device To do this, click Start, type Sound in the text box, and click the resulting Sound item in the Programs list You can also click Start, click Control Panel, and then doubleclick Sound Table 3-5 shows connection types and a description of each (Note that throughout this book we re using Classic View If you aren t using Classic View, the directions are Start | Control Panel | Hardware And Sound | Sound) The new Sound dialog box in Windows Vista Control Panel lists all of your Media Center PC s sound outputs on the Playback tab, microphones and other inputs on the Recording tab, and Windows system sounds on the Sounds tab When you open the Sound dialog box, it should display the Playback tab by default If your Media Center PC has an S/PDIF output, it may be labeled as Digital Output Select Digital Output, and click Set Default
