Jay B Abrams, ASA, CPA, MBA, a nationally known authority in valuing privately held businesses, is the author of Quantitative Business Valuation: A Mathematical Approach for Today s Professionals, published by McGraw-Hill in 2001, the most advanced book in the valuation profession He has published numerous seminal articles in the American Society of Appraisers Valuation journal, Business Valuation Review, and The Valuation Examiner He has an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago, where he also took graduate courses in the Department of Economics He received his bachelor s degree in Business Administration from California State University at Northridge, where he received the Arthur Young (now Ernst & Young) Outstanding Accounting Student Award in 1972 Mr Abrams has spoken in a variety of different professional and public forums about valuing privately held businesses, including the American Society of Appraisers, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Center for Employee Ownership, and the Anthony Robbins Mastery University He has taught valuation seminars for the University of Southern California, University of California at San Diego extension classes, and numerous continuing legal education seminars

In 1992, Mr Abrams published the mathematical solution to a 500-year-old problem how to pinpoint the source of an accounting transposition error It is one of dozens of inventions attributed to him, many of which are valuation formulas and models that appear in Quantitative Business Valuation The April 2002 issue of CFO magazine highlighted one of these inventions the Periodic Perpetuity Factor (PPF) whose applications go beyond valuation The PPF can enable firms that make large capital purchases of long-lived, expensive equipment (eg, ships, airplanes, biomedical equipment, fleets of trucks or automobiles, etc) to decide whether to buy new or used equipment and how long to keep the equipment before selling it Mr Abrams was a project manager at Arthur D Little Valuation, Inc, in Los Angeles, where he performed the valuations of Columbia Pictures, Dr Pepper, Purex, MCO Geothermal, and many other large firms He is currently the principal of Abrams Valuation Group, a firm that specializes in business valuation, with headquarters in North Hollywood, California, and offices in New York He can be reached at 818-505-6008 or jay@abramsvaluationcom The company Web site is wwwabramsvaluationcom He lives in the Los Angeles area with his wife and five children
