When you re setting up a VPN on Mac OS X Server, you can use either L2TP Over IPSec or PPTP: L2TP Over IPSec Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) over IP Security (IPSec) is usually the best choice for VPNs on Mac networks This type of VPN uses strong encryption derived either from a signed digital certificate or from a shared secret, a sort of password Use L2TP Over IPSec for your VPN unless you have a compelling reason to use PPTP This section shows L2TP in its examples because L2TP is the VPN technology you re most likely to use for a Mac OS X Server VPN PPTP Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is an older tunneling protocol that is much less secure than L2TP Over IPSec PPTP is secured by a password and uses either 128-bit encryption (which is fine) or 40-bit encryption (which is much too weak) At this writing, the only reason to use PPTP for a Mac OS X Server based VPN is if some of your clients are running Mac OS X version 102 (Jaguar) which they shouldn t be even in these straitened times

Setting Up an L2TP VPN
To set up an L2TP VPN, follow these steps: 1 In the Servers pane in Server Admin, click the VPN service in the list of services under the server to display the VPN screens 2 Click the Settings button to display the Settings pane 3 Click the L2TP tab to display the L2TP pane (see Figure 11-2) NOTE To set up a PPTP VPN, click the PPTP tab instead of the L2TP tab The PPTP pane has fewer settings than the L2TP pane, but most of the settings it does have are similar to those in the L2TP pane, so you ll have no trouble figuring them out from the instructions here The one setting that deserves mention is the Allow 40-Bit Encryption Keys In Addition To 128-Bit check box Make sure this check box is cleared unless you are compelled to accept connections with 40-bit encryption, which is too weak to be safe
Figure 11-2 Use the settings in the L2TP pane for the VPN service to set up an L2TP VPN
Integrating Macs into Windows Networks
4 Select the Enable L2TP Over IPSec check box to make the remaining controls in the pane available 5 In the Starting IP Address text box, type the first IP address that you want to assign to clients that connect to the VPN CAUTION Give your VPN clients a block of IP addresses that you keep separate from the rest of your network In particular, keep the VPN IP addresses separate from the block of IP addresses that your DHCP server assigns This separation both helps avoid DHCP problems and lets you easily distinguish the VPN clients from local clients 6 In the Ending IP Address text box, type the last IP address that you want to assign to VPN clients 7 If you want to use load balancing on your VPN, select the Enable Load Balancing check box and then type the balancing IP address in the Cluster IP Address text box 8 In the PPP Authentication box, choose the authentication method for PPP: Directory Service Select this option button to have VPN clients authenticate via the directory service Choose Kerberos in the Authentication pop-up menu if you ve set up a Kerberos authentication server; choose MS-CHAPv2 if you haven t got Kerberos RADIUS Select this option button to have VPN clients authenticate via a Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) server Type the primary RADIUS server s IP address in the Primary IP Address text box and its shared secret in the Shared Secret text box, then enter the corresponding information for the secondary RADIUS server 9 In the IPSec Authentication box, choose how to authenticate VPN clients via IPSec: Shared Secret Select this option button to authenticate users via the password that you type in the text box Make this password strong 8 characters absolute minimum, 12 characters sensible minimum, including letters, numbers, and symbols Certificate Select this option button to authenticate users via the certificate that you pick from the pop-up menu 10 Click the Save button to save the changes you ve made to the VPN service
