Now that the server is ready to accept VPN connections, you can set up the client Macs and connect them to the VPN

To set up a client Mac to connect to the VPN, follow these steps on the Mac: 1 Open the System Preferences window For example, click the System Preferences icon in the Dock or choose Apple | System Preferences 2 In the Internet & Wireless area, click the Network icon to display the Network pane 3 Click the + button below the list of networks in the left pane to display the dialog box shown in Figure 11-5 (with VPN settings already chosen) 4 Open the Interface pop-up menu and choose VPN The dialog box adds the VPN Type pop-up menu 5 In the VPN Type pop-up menu, select the VPN type you need: L2TP Over IPSec, PPTP, or Cisco IPSec This example uses L2TP Over IPSec System Preferences enters a generic name derived from the VPN type in the Service Name text box for example, VPN (L2TP)

6 In the Service Name text box, type a descriptive name that the user will easily recognize in place of the default name for example, Acme Heavy Corporation VPN rather than VPN (L2TP) 7 Click the Create button to close the dialog box System Preferences adds the VPN entry to the list of network interfaces Click it to display its configuration screen (see Figure 11-6) NOTE You can create multiple configurations for the VPN This section assumes you re creating just a single configuration To create another configuration, open the Configuration pop-up menu and choose Add Configuration In the Create A New Configuration Called dialog box, type the name for the configuration and then click the Create button You can then set the details of the new configuration

8 Leave the Default item selected in the Configuration pop-up menu for now 9 In the Server Address text box, type the IP address of the server 10 In the Account Name text box, type the user s account name for the VPN connection 11 Click the Authentication Settings button to display the Authentication Settings dialog box (see Figure 11-7) 12 In the User Authentication area, select the appropriate option button: Password, RSA SecurID, Certificate, Kerberos, or CryptoCard For a password, type it in the text box For a certificate, click the Select button, click the certificate in the Choose An Identity dialog box that opens, and then click the Continue button 13 In the Machine Authentication area, select the option button for the means of authenticating the computer: Shared Secret If you select this option button, type the password in the text box Certificate If you select this option button, click the Select button and then choose the certificate 14 If this Mac is part of a group, type the group name in the Group Name text box 15 Click the OK button to close the Authentication Settings dialog box

16 Select the Show VPN Status In Menu Bar check box if you want to display the VPN status icon in the Mac OS X menu bar This is handy if you (or the user) use the VPN often NOTE The choices you ve made in this section are all that you need for many VPN connections If you need to choose further settings, see the next section, Choosing Advanced VPN Settings 17 Click the Apply button to apply the choices you ve made
