Backing Up Macs and a Mac Server with Time Machine
In this section, you ll learn to use Time Machine to back up multiple Macs to a server, and then to use Time Machine to back up the server as well This section assumes you re using Mac OS X Server in a magic triangle arrangement The first move is to set up Time Machine in Server Preferences on the Mac OS X server You then set up the Macs to use the server as the Time Machine destination Last, you set up the server s own Time Machine arrangement
Setting Up Time Machine in Server Preferences
On your Mac OS X server, use Server Preferences to set up Time Machine like this: 1 Open Server Preferences For example, click the Server Preferences icon in the Dock 2 In the System area, click the Time Machine icon to display the Time Machine pane (see Figure 12-5) 3 Click the Select Backup Disk button to display the Choose Destination Volume For Client Time Machine Backups dialog box (see Figure 12-6) 4 Click the disk you want to use NOTE If you have a Time Capsule (Apple s wireless network backup drive), click the Set Up Time Capsule button in the Time Machine Backups dialog box and then use AirPort Utility to set up the Time Capsule
Figure 12-5 The Time Machine pane in Server Preferences looks like this when Time Machine is not yet turned on
