However capacious your backup disk, it ll fill up sooner or later To buy time, you can delete older backups manually or let Time Machine delete them automatically, but sooner or later you ll probably want to replace the backup disk with another disk instead To switch to another backup disk, all you need to do is open the Time Machine pane in Server Preferences and use the Choose Destination Volume For Client Time Machine Backups dialog box to tell Time Machine which disk to use, just as you did when setting up Time Machine at first This is easy enough, but there s a complication: When you switch to another disk, Time Machine doesn t copy your old backups to the new disk It just leaves them where they were This means two things: First, when users run their next backup, Time Machine will be making a full backup rather than an incremental backup The backup will take that much longer so you should warn them ahead of time Second, if you want to keep some of those backups, you may want to copy them from the old disk to somewhere safe

Now that you ve set up the Time Machine disk on the server and chosen which user accounts to enable, you need to make the client Macs use the Time Machine disk as their backup location When a user who does not yet have Time Machine set up logs in to the network, Mac OS X automatically prompts them to use the Time Machine disk you ve designated as their backup location If the user accepts the invitation (and you should encourage them to do so), Mac OS X sets up Time Machine to use that disk and starts creating backups NOTE If a user is unable to set up Time Machine using the automated process, you can set up Time Machine manually by using System Preferences, as described earlier in this chapter

When Time Machine is set up, you may want to prevent users from turning it off or pointing it to another drive To do so, remove Time Machine from System Preferences like this: 1 Open Workgroup Manager For example, click the Workgroup Manager icon in the Dock 2 In the Workgroup Manager Connect dialog box, enter the server s address, your username and password, and then click the Connect button

Running a Backup Manually
Usually, it s most convenient to leave Time Machine in peace to back up your systems at regular intervals But sometimes it s useful to force a backup at a particular time for example, before putting a MacBook through your local airport s security system To run a backup now, click the Time Machine status icon on the menu bar and choose Back Up Now from the menu The backup runs immediately If necessary, you can stop it by clicking the Time Machine status icon on the menu bar and then choosing Stop Backing Up from the menu NOTE It s fine to stop a backup if you need to Time Machine simply delays the backup until the next scheduled time Or you can short-circuit the wait by opening the Time Machine status menu and choosing Back Up Now
