If you wanted to extend this idea to add other help buttons pointing at different help pages, the simplest way would be to have a number of loadHelpFor... methods, but that approach would be inelegant and begging for refactoring. Another approach would be to change the loadHelpForJournalEntry: method into a general-purpose loadHelpForTopic: method, and check within the method for the sender in order to determine which help page to load. I m not going to give you the line-by-line detail of how to do this, but have a look at the TemperatureConverterAppDelegate class in the TemperatureConverter project (first introduced in 6 but revisited several times since). In the convertTemperature: method you can check which NSTextField supplied the starting temperature, and that determines which calculation the method then runs. You could use this approach, with some adaptation, to determine which of a variety of help buttons was clicked and thus which help page needs to be loaded.

Well, I hope you enjoyed that trip off the beaten track, and I hope you are sold on some of these lesser-used utilities and tools. I think they generously repay the modest effort that you put in to learn them. In a sense, you ll be staying on the back roads in the next chapter, when we take a look at usability and accessibility two hugely important topics but ones that rarely get an outing in Mac developer books. In the next chapter, you ll learn how you might make your application more usable in general or more usable by users with impairments. I hope you ll stick with me, and turn the page to 14.

Once upon a time I worked in a large corporation in the (at that time) novel capacity of a usability specialist. I had a hard time of it. For one thing, the very idea of building systems whose behaviors conformed to common standards was novel. PC software was gradually emerging from the prehistory of the DOS command line and characterbased user interfaces into the comparatively modern world of Windows. In those days the use of a graphic user interface per se was deemed to make a program user-friendly. Often repurposing an application for Windows involved literally presenting the characterbased interface, together with its bespoke key controls, into a window. I frequently had conversations with developers whose aim was to focus on the features of the software, with the only nod toward usability being an offer to make it look pretty at the end. Convincing such developers that in fact usability is a systemic issue that you should design your software from top to bottom to be usable, rather than putting lipstick on a pig was a long and tough task. Fortunately for me I was also, in my spare time, a Macintosh user. This exposed me very early on to the benefits to be had from designing software that didn t just look pretty but also had well-defined, predictable behaviors, and structures and workflows that conformed to expectations. It also gave me good examples of consistent design to draw on, and gradually things improved. Nowadays software developers don t need much convincing the value of consistent, well-designed, and above all usable software is clear, and no one sets out to write unusable systems. Still, there is always the temptation to just get coding, and in doing so it is possible to miss out on some of the opportunities to enhance the usability of a system by understanding and applying some of the basic principles of human-computer interaction. In this chapter you will cover those basic principles and see how Xcode s tools help you to make usable software. You will also be exploring the relatively unknown territory of accessible software, and see how, with a modest investment of effort, you can make your products both usable by and accessible to all of your potential users.
