I opened the image in Photoshop, cropped it to 537 336 pixels to fit the size I wanted in the disk image window, and reduced the opacity to 20% as a background image it shouldn t overwhelm the icons. I also added a couple of boxes as placeholders for the icons, an arrow, and a message to the user. The final Photoshop image looked like Figure 15 4 (the Layers window is also shown so you can see how the image went together).

Next I saved the image out as a PNG file with transparency. Once you have your background image, reopen the Text Pal dmg file. Use View Show View Options to bring up the options for the disk image, and set them as shown in Figure 15 5. This involves dragging the new PNG file onto the image well near the bottom of the options window. Also set the icon size to 128 pixels, tell Finder to open it in icon view, and set Arrange By: to None (so that you can position the icons properly). The final step is to add an icon as a target for the user to drop the application in order to install it in the /Applications folder. To do this, mount your disk image file again. It appears on the Desktop. Next, open a terminal window, change to the folder of the disk image and create a softlink pointing to the /Applications folder (see Listing 15 1).

The syntax for this command means "create a softlink for the location /Applications and put it in the current folder with the name Applications. This softlink appears in the Finder window with an icon similar to an alias. Here s how the final disk image window looks (Figure 15 6). Now your user can simply drag over the Text Pal icon and drop it on the softlink icon, and it will be installed in the /Applications folder.

It may be that this is all you need for distributing your application to your customers. Many of the biggest and best-known applications in the marketplace are distributed in exactly this way. However, it s worth taking a look at the installation packaging tool that Apple has provided as part of the Xcode Developer Tools. If you want the user experience you are offering to your customers to extend to the installation process, then you might like to try out PackageMaker. Let s take a closer look.

PackageMaker
When you install one of Apple s own applications (including the Xcode Developer Tools), or Parallels, or any of hundreds of other applications, you ll be using an installation package produced by PackageMaker. PackageMaker is really the tool of choice if you want to give your user maximum control over the installation process, or if your application has to do something out of the ordinary (such as running pre- or postinstallation steps).
What s in Store
Here s a quick thumbnail sketch of the PackageMaker process. PackageMaker collects the assets that you want to provide in the installation package and the rules that you want to apply to the installation process (for example, don t install on a version below Mac OS X 10.4 or if there is less than 10 GB of available disk space, and so on), and allows you to choose options like the location of the installation and whether and how you will handle upgrades as opposed to new installations, and to define scripts to run before or after the installation. It s a sophisticated and comprehensive installation tool.
