This preference panel lists all the file types you might expect to be working with in your Xcode software development and allows you to define how those file types are handled. For example, you can specify that image files in your application should be opened with Photoshop, PHP files with TextMate, and so on. In general, my advice with this panel is to leave it with the default mappings unless you have a very good reason not to.

This preference is aimed at development teams for which particular source files need to be in locations other than the project folder (for example, custom Objective-C classes that need to be shared among a group of developers). As a new developer in Xcode, you are not likely to need to make any changes here.

This preference panel lets you define how to manage the Developer Documentation. You may recall that this was an option during the Xcode installation. Selecting the checkbox ensures that you can keep the documentation up to date, or you can use the button to do this on demand. By default, you will have access to the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Core Library and the Xcode 3.2 Developer Tools Library, but you can also choose to get a range of other libraries. See Figure 2 10.

CHAPTER 2: Introducing the Xcode Workspace
Summary
So there it is. By now you should have a good picture of how to get around the Xcode Workspace and how to make it look the way you want. You ll have a growing sense of the powerful code development tools at your fingertips. However, you are probably also aware that there is something missing. A big part of Mac software is a great user interface a compelling visual design that draws you into the application and is strongly focused on user experience. This being an Apple product, wouldn t you expect the Xcode Tools to include great support tools for creating that user experience Of course you would, and you won t be disappointed. Interface Builder is the tool of choice for professional Mac and iPhone developers. That s where you are going in the next chapter.
Interface Builder
Professional User Interface Design and More for Your Xcode Projects
If you have used other software development systems like REALbasic, or written code on other platforms, chances are you have used a system that integrates the coding and interface design in one holistic, coordinated user interface (usually called an integrated development environment, or IDE). REALbasic and Visual Studio on the Windows .NET platform are good examples of this kind of system. One of the most engaging features of such systems is the way they link events on the objects in your user interface to the underlying code. For example, you may create a user interface in REALbasic that shows a window with a button, a textbox, and a label. Then you double-click on the button and type in the code for the Action method for that button. Lo and behold, you have a simple Hello World application. It all happens in one application in one window, in fact. This approach can be a great way to get started on code development, helping you to connect the events occurring in your application with the visual objects that take part in those events. Now it might seem odd to begin this chapter by talking about a completely different product (and that, by the way, was the last mention of other ways of writing Mac OS X software there are plenty of other books around on those!), but there is a good reason. Development of Mac OS X software using the Xcode Tools is unlike using any other software development system, and nowhere is this uniqueness more evident than in the way in which you build the user interface and connect it to your application code. Forget most of what you know about other development environments: Interface Builder is different. This difference is one of the biggest hurdles to the new developer, and so this chapter will spend a lot of time going over how it works. You will be spending the first part of this chapter entirely in Interface Builder. In order to focus just on Interface Builder, you will be starting it up directly from the Finder. (As you will see later in the chapter, your normal route into Interface Builder is from the Xcode Workspace.) You will then create a few disposable interfaces just to get the feel of the environment.
