tools and Objective-C development. They can be invaluable in getting you through programming problems. The internet being the dynamic entity that it is, this is obviously a snapshot as of mid2009. Websites come and go, but chances are good that these will be around when you come to look at them: Cocoadevcentral (http://www.cocoadevcentral.com/). If documentation doesn t help (and often it doesn t), all is not lost. There are large communities of Apple developers who are active on mailing lists and web forums, and they can be excellent sources of valuable information.

A word of cautionary advice for newcomers to the Apple mailing lists. In the case of the cocoa-dev and similar Apple hosted lists, and unusually for internet mailing lists, there is a very high signal-to-noise ratio that is, a high proportion of what you read there is useful and on-topic. That is good for you as a consumer of the information, but it is achieved at a cost. That cost is an expectation that you have carried out due diligence first that you have read the documentation, used Google, and in general have done reasonable background research into your problem. That way you don t waste people s time and clutter up the list with another round on a well-known problem. You also need to make sure that your question is relevant the terms of reference for these mailing lists are well defined and rigorously enforced. If you follow the guidelines, you will find that the responses you get from the denizens of these communities are helpful and focused. If you don t, you can expect a firm hand from the moderators and little patience from the rest of the community. Does all this seem a little harsh, perhaps narrow-minded Absolutely, and long may it continue so. The people who, on the whole, use these mailing lists understand the importance of keeping the discussion focused and within the parameters for which the list was set up.

Apple hosts over 100 mailing lists aimed at the developer community. With these on offer, you are likely to find something of interest here the most sensible places to start if you are a Mac developer are the Cocoa-dev and Xcode-dev lists. Like most internet mailing lists, you need to actively subscribe to the list. Once subscribed you are able to post questions, comments and answers to the list and all other subscribers will receive a copy. To see what s offered, go to http://lists.apple.com. You will probably have used the Apple Discussion Forums at one time or another. Apple have recently introduced a range of Developer Forums hosted at https://devforums.apple.com/community/mac. These are restricted forums aimed at developers who want to create software targeted at new versions of Mac OS X. You will need to have either a Select or Premier Apple Developer Connection subscription to get access to these forums.

RSS Feeds
On many pages in the ADC reference libraries and other help resources, you will see an RSS logo. Follow the link, where you see it, to go to the Apple Developer RSS Feeds page. For example, right-click on the Leopard Reference Library link and choose to load the link in a new browser window. This loads the RSS feed into your chosen browser. Just as with any other RSS feed, you can choose to have this sent to your Apple Mail client or other RSS reader software.
