When performing high-lift grouting, openings must be provided at the base of the wall The openings provide access for removal of mortar droppings from the space that will be grouted The openings also permit an inspector to observe whether reinforcing bars are correctly positioned and to verify that the space is completely filled after grout placement These openings, called cleanouts, must be located at each reinforcing bar location or at 32 inches on center Cleanouts may be formed by omitting masonry units, which are placed after the space is observed and before the grout is placed, or by removing the face shell of selected units in hollow masonry When the face shell is removed, it may be retained for later installation, or the cleanout may be sealed with form board and bracing as shown in Figure 615 Refer to 7 for proper placement of steel reinforcement
