Netscape 6, which includes a completely new version of the popular Navigator browser, comes with its own e-mail and newsreader program The program is called Mail & Newsgroups on Netscape s Task menu, but we ll just call it Netscape Mail See 6 for how to get and configure Netscape 6 To open Netscape Mail, choose Tasks | Mail & Newsgroups from the menu bar, or click the Mail icon in the lower-left corner of the Netscape window When you run Netscape Mail for the first time, you need to tell the program which news server (or news servers) you plan to use: 1 In the Netscape Mail window, choose Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings from the menu bar 2 In the dialog box that appears, click the New Account button The New Account Setup Wizard appears Click Next to move from screen to screen 3 Choose the Newsgroup Account option 4 On the Identity page, enter the name and e-mail address that you would like to identify yourself with in newsgroups You do not have to use your regular e-mail address; to avoid spam, some people use a separate e-mail address for newsgroup postings (for example, a Hotmail or Yahoo Mail account) 5 On the Server Information page, enter the address of your NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) news server, which is usually something like newsdomaincom or sometimes usenetdomaincom, where domaincom is the domain name part (not necessarily ending in com ) of your e-mail address To read a public news server, ask your ISP for the name of their news server 6 On the Account Name page, enter a nice name that s easy to remember For our example, you could use LarryNet s News Server or something similar Click Next and Finish When you are finished, you return to the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box There, the list of accounts on the left side of the dialog box now includes a new item the news server Categories appear below it (click the gray arrow to the left of the server name if the categories don t appear), as shown in Figure 12-2 Click these categories Server Settings, Copies And Folders, Addressing, and Offline & Disk Space to modify your news server settings as needed If the news server requires a user name and password to connect, Netscape Mail prompts you to enter this information when you first access it

In the Netscape Mail window, your news server appears in the list of mail folders at the left side of the window, as shown in Figure 12-3 To find newsgroups to subscribe to, click the news server you just created, and a new page appears in the right-hand pane Under the Newsgroups heading, click the Subscribe To Newsgroups link The Subscribe dialog box appears (as shown in Figure 12-4) and asks you if you would like to download the list of available newsgroups After the list loads, which may take a long time, depending on your connection speed, you can select lists whose subjects interest you Type a word into the Show Items That Contain field to narrow the list Try using terms that are specific, like surfing or Madonna or Access 2002 Vague terms like computer, software, and music can result in very large lists that are no help at all New newsgroups are added frequently From time to time, take a look at the list of new newsgroups to see if any match your interest Choose File | Subscribe and click the Refresh button
