If your computer is on an intranet or LAN that uses a gateway or proxy server (described in 4) to connect to the Internet, you may need to tell IE to contact the proxy server to get web pages from the Internet Contact your LAN administrator to find out whether your proxy server uses manual or automatic configuration For automatic proxy configuration, find out the URL of the web page that contains the proxy configuration information For manual configuration, find out the numeric IP address of the proxy server When you know your proxy configuration web page or IP address, follow these steps in Internet Explorer: 1 Choose Tools | Internet Options and click the Connections tab, then the LAN Settings button You see this dialog box:

2 For automatic configuration, select either the Automatically Detect Settings or Use Automatic Configuration Script check box and type the URL in the Address box in the Automatic Configuration section of the dialog box For manual configuration, type the numeric IP address of the proxy server in the Proxy Server Address box and 80 in the Port box 3 Select the Bypass Proxy Server For Local Addresses check box if you are on a LAN with a local web server 4 Click the Advanced button if you need to set up a proxy for other Internet protocols or if you have other addresses that bypass the proxy server 5 Click OK

If your LAN connects to the Internet using Internet Connection Sharing, clear all the check boxes on the Local Area Network Settings dialog box

Here are commands and buttons you can use to find what you re looking for in a long web page, see the HTML code that makes up a web page, print pages that use frames, display more than one web page at the same time, and perform other useful tricks

To find a word, phrase, or character string within a currently displayed web page, select Edit | Find (On This Page) from the menu or press CTRL-F (z-F on a Mac) A Find dialog box appears Type what you want to find into the Find What box and select the appropriate check boxes within the Find dialog box If you choose Match Whole Word Only, IE doesn t return words in which your search specification is only part of a larger word For example, if you specify book, IE doesn t locate bookend or bookstore If you check

Match Case, IE finds only those strings that match the capitalization that you type in the Find What box For example, IE doesn t find smith or SMITH if you type Smith Choose the Up or Down radio button to search up or down the document Click the Find Next button to begin the search, and to continue the search after a match is found On a Macintosh, the only check boxes are Match Case and Start From Top The Mac s Find box and Find button correspond, respectively, to Windows Find What box and Find Next button Don t use the Search button to search within a page The Search button is for finding pages on the Web, not for searching within pages

You can view the HTML source code of a web page (described in 24) and edit it with a word processor To do so, view the page in IE and select View | Source from the menu In Windows, a Notepad window opens, displaying the HTML source code On Macs, the source opens in an Internet Explorer viewing window, which you can t edit (If you want to edit the source code for your own use, save the file and open it with a word processor)
