Access is safer, of course, but disables some potentially useful applets Unrestricted Access lets an applet exchange data with any server on the Internet, which for most people is an unnecessary risk The Restrict Access to Non-Java Class Files box is checked by default It prevents Java applets from reading or changing non-Java files on your computer This is a good safety precaution; unless you know that you want to run a particular applet that needs file access, leave the box checked

Internet Explorer stores all ActiveX controls in a single folder In Windows, this folder is C:\Windows\ Downloaded Program Files On a Mac, it is System Folder/Extensions/ ActiveX Controls Check this folder periodically to see what applications IE has downloaded Deleting files from this folder uninstalls the associated applications (ActiveX is described in 17) Disabling ActiveX controls entirely isn t a bad idea You seldom run into them, except on web sites that are somehow connected with Microsoft (like MSNBC); because ActiveX controls have fewer restrictions than Java applets, they open a large can of worms On the Mac, you can disable ActiveX controls with a single click: on the Web Browser/Web Content panel (under Web Browser) of the Internet Explorer Preferences dialog box, uncheck Enable ActiveX Disabling ActiveX on Windows versions of IE is possible, but more difficult, because ActiveX controls are controlled by the security level settings To disable ActiveX controls for a security zone without affecting anything else, you have to customize the security level of that zone (Refer to Changing a Zone s Security Level in IE earlier in this chapter)

choose the Web Browser/Ratings panel from the category list In either case, click the Settings button to display this dialog box:
In Windows Me and earlier, Content Advisor makes you choose a password In Windows XP and on Macs, the default password is blank, and you can set a password by clicking the Create Password button (In Windows, it s on the General tab of the Content Advisor dialog box) IE initially includes only the RSACi ratings system, and the default settings are the most restrictive If this is what you want, you can click OK and be done Otherwise, you can use the Content Advisor dialog box to change the settings, as described in the section Changing IE Content Advisor Preferences later in this chapter To disable Content Advisor, open the Content tab of the Internet Options dialog box as you did when you enabled Content Advisor Click the Disable button and enter your Content Advisor password when requested Enabling Content Advisor again (after disabling it) is simpler than setting it up the first time: click the Enable button on the Content tab of the Internet Options dialog box and then give the supervisor password when asked Content Advisor remembers your previous settings

Adding or Removing Ratings Systems in IE
Before you add a ratings system other than RSACi to Content Advisor, you should enable Content Advisor, as described in the preceding section Ratings systems are described by RAT files Thus, to add a ratings system to Content Advisor, you first need to get a copy of the rating system s corresponding RAT file (SafeSurf s ratings file, for example, is SafeSurfrat Based on SafeSurf s web page at wwwsafesurfcom, you might guess that this file works only for Windows versions of IE, but this isn t true) Typically, the RAT file can be downloaded from the web site of the ratings organization After you download the RAT file, save it In Windows, the installation process is simplest if you save the RAT file in C:\Windows\System folder After you obtain the RAT file of the ratings system that you want to install, you need to tell Content Advisor about it To do this in Windows, 1 Go to the Content tab of the Internet Options dialog box (Choose Tools | Internet Options in IE and click the Content tab) 2 Click the Settings button and then enter your Content Advisor password to display the Content Advisor dialog box 3 Click the Ratings Systems button on the General tab of the Content Advisor dialog box You see the Ratings Systems dialog box In this box, you find a list of the RAT files that correspond to the ratings systems that Content Advisor knows about 4 Click the Add button 5 When the Open Ratings System File dialog box appears, browse until you find the RAT file of the ratings system that you want to add When you select this file, the Open Ratings System File dialog box disappears, and the new RAT file appears in the Ratings Systems dialog box 6 Click OK to return to the Content Advisor dialog box Click the Ratings tab to set the blocking levels for your new ratings system To remove a ratings system from Content Advisor under Windows, display the Ratings Systems dialog box by repeating steps 1 through 3 Select the corresponding RAT file on the list in the Ratings Systems dialog box and then click the Remove button On Macs, you add or remove ratings systems from Content Advisor from the Web Browser/Ratings panel of the Internet Explorer Preferences dialog box (select Edit | Preferences) To remove a ratings system, select it from the Ratings Settings section of the Web Browser/Ratings tab of the dialog box and click the Remove Service button If you have set a password, Content Advisor asks for it before removing the ratings system To add a ratings system on Macs, click the Add Service button and find the service s RAT file in the window that appears Click Open to install the ratings service
