Radio Buttons
Use radio buttons when you want to present a set of choices to readers, from which the user can choose only one You create each radio button with an <INPUT> tag that sets the TYPE attribute to RADIO Each radio button in the group must have the same name (specified with the NAME attribute) If you have more than one set of radio buttons on your form, make up a unique name for each set The VALUE attribute indicates the value of the button s input if the user chooses that button When the user submits a form, the browser uses the value of the chosen radio button as the value for the set of buttons For example, these three <INPUT> tags create a set of three radio buttons, from which the user can choose only one (Figure 24-4 shows the resulting radio buttons)
<INPUT TYPE="RADIO" NAME="bknumber" VALUE="three">Three <INPUT TYPE="RADIO" NAME="bknumber" VALUE="four">Four <INPUT TYPE="RADIO" NAME="bknumber" VALUE="more">More than four
Check Boxes
Use check boxes when the reader can choose more than one of the options in a set of inputs Sets of check boxes are similar to sets of radio buttons, and the tags contain the same attributes as radio button tags However, with check boxes, readers can select as many options as they want For example, this set of check boxes lets the user choose as many media types as he or she wants (Figure 24-4 shows the resulting check boxes)
<INPUT TYPE="CHECKBOX" NAME="media" VALUE="newspaper">Newspaper<BR> <INPUT TYPE="CHECKBOX" NAME="media" VALUE="magazine">Magazine<BR> <INPUT TYPE="CHECKBOX" NAME="media" VALUE="radio">Radio<BR>
To force each selection on a radio button list or check box list to be displayed on a separate line, add a <BR> tag at the end of each <INPUT> tag
Drop-Down Menus
Drop-down menus are useful if you need to conserve space on your form The selections do not appear onscreen; they are displayed only when the reader clicks the drop-down arrow Most drop-down menus allow only one item to be selected However, you can set a Multiple option to allow readers to select more than one item (To select more than one item, the reader s browser must support this feature, and the reader must know which keys to use to select more than one item on a list In Windows, you can select more than one item from a list by pressing SHIFT-DOWN ARROW) Every drop-down menu that you create on your form must be assigned a unique name Type a <SELECT> tag to start a drop-down menu, and type a matching </SELECT> tag at the end of the tags for the menu The <SELECT> tag must include the NAME
