Web images sometimes look worse when they are viewed in a browser or on someone else s computer than they looked originally This problem arises because the browser, the computer s display adapter, or its operating system doesn t have as many different display colors as the original hardware and software To compensate for the colors that it doesn t have, the displaying system must either dither the image by mixing dots of colors that it does have, or substitute colors for the original ones The result can be speckled images or peculiar colors To avoid having some other computer dither or substitute colors in your image, you need to use the smallest commonly used color palette That minimal palette, sometimes called a web-safe or Netscape palette, consists of 216 specific color values that were chosen by Netscape years ago (An even more minimal palette is the set of 16 fixed, so-called Windows colors) If you choose to create images in the limited web-safe palette, you sacrifice the maximum quality that your image could provide in order to gain control You, not the system on which your image is viewed, now control how the dithering is done and what colors appear where In gaining that control, you reduce your image to the lowest common denominator You lose the quality that a larger palette offers: a crisper, richer, higher-fidelity image Should you make the trade-off The decision depends on how much you care about delivering top image quality to the viewers in your audience, but with lower graphics capability The web-safe, 216-color standard assumes people are running the lowest color quality commonly available in Microsoft Windows: 256 colors (8-bit color) Some systems, however (certain UNIX systems, for instance), actually use even lower color depth than that The majority of computers and browsers today use much higher color depth Many run at least 16-bit color (32,000 or 64,000 colors) By adopting web-safe colors, you deprive those viewers of higher quality Many web sites now optimize their graphics for this higher color depth

If you decide to use the web-safe colors for maximum control, how do you do so All but the most basic graphics programs let you construct a palette, load a palette from a file, or customize a palette of an existing image by removing, adding, or adjusting colors Some programs, such as Photoshop and Fireworks, offer web-safe palettes built into the program If your graphics program does not have a web-safe palette included, one practical way to get one is to obtain an image in web-safe colors, save the palette as a separate file (if your graphics program allows it), and then apply that palette file to your own images An example of such an image file is on the Web at the-lightcom/netcolpcgif, a graphic created by Victor S Engle You can find other examples on the Web by searching for the phrase web-safe palette Open a web-safe image in your graphics program, and look for a command that saves the image s palette as a file In Paint Shop Pro, for instance, choose Colors | Save Palette In Photoshop, use File | Save For Web, and click the Color Palette Menu button next to the color table Once you have this palette as a file, you can load it either before you create a new image or after you open an existing image, to convert that image to web-safe colors

The GIF format sometimes displays photographs poorly If a photograph in GIF format is blotchy or speckled, uses unrealistic colors, or has bands of color instead of gradation, it may have been scanned using too few colors, or its palette may have been reduced too far Repeat the scan or palette reduction from the original image, using a larger palette You can also reduce a speckled or banded area to a uniform color (See the following section) A more attractive way to replace blotches, pools, or bands of colors may be to smudge certain areas of the image or to apply a blur filter if your graphics program provides those tools If possible, a more satisfactory alternative in many cases is to rescan the image and save it as a JPEG
