Web pages can have an image for a background (a feature coded into the HTML page, not the image itself, as described in s 24 and 25) That image automatically tiles repeats itself in rows and columns across the width and height of the browser window Only one copy of the image file is downloaded; the browser does the repetition To make the background image into a continuous surface, especially a textured surface, such as pebbles, flocked paper, or granite, the image must not appear to repeat; or if it does appear to repeat, like wallpaper, it should not show seams Some advanced programs offer special features for seamless tiling, matching the left side of an image to its right side, and its top to its bottom, so that no obvious border appears Such background images can be quite small, requiring little download time, yet still fill the page

Optimizing an image for speed and quality is no easy task You must consider the different computers and browsers viewing the image, the image content, the palette, and more Some web graphics optimizing tools can help you trim file size in half, even after your best manual efforts Many of the tools already mentioned include optimizations of various sorts More advanced tools are available, either in the form of programs or filters Filters often conform to the Photoshop plug-in filter standard, which means that a wide variety of programs can use them Some advanced tools may require that you have a good comprehension of computer graphics issues to use the tool properly The following are two examples of filters especially designed for compression and optimization: I Boxtop Software offers a variety of Photoshop-standard filters for the Mac and PC Image Vice is one such filter that performs advanced palette optimization as well as clipping, smoothing, and convergence operations that reduce areas of mixed colors into sets of uniform colors for better compression A small preview is offered

Animation programs often can create a GIF animation from individual images either by tweening (creating transition frames between images) or by expanding upon a single image, using such special effects as wipes, fades, dissolves, and explodes Some programs contain all that you need to do text-only animations using those effects Figure 26-3 shows a waving flag animation of text in Animation Shop

Multimedia Graphics
Multimedia generally refers to movies, animations, audio, and interactivity (response to user input) You can think of multimedia on the Web as coming in two forms: standard video, audio, and animation files in formats supported by more than one vendor, and proprietary multimedia that requires acquiring a particular vendor s proprietary software to either create or play (This book discusses audio files in 27) Standard multimedia graphics include animation in GIF and Java, and video in several forms: MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group), AVI (Microsoft s audio/video format, Audio Video Interleave), WMF (Windows Media Format), and QuickTime (Apple s audio/ video format) Exactly how standard these formats are is open to debate In earlier web browsers, you needed additional plug-ins to view all of these formats Gradually, browser vendors are including in web browsers the capability to view these formats (or to use the operating system s ability to view them) Still, not all users can view all of these formats or their variants without adding plug-ins or players Standard animation on the Web currently is achieved by using animated GIFs or Flash, (discussed earlier in this chapter) or Java and Dynamic HTML (DHTML) Java is a programming language that runs within Java-capable browsers and that can animate graphics in various ways The programs, called applets, are downloaded to your browser by a web page and then executed 28 discusses Java applets and DHTML further In addition, new formats are always being proposed for the Web Preparing standard web video formats requires a video source (a camera, VCR, and a video capture card or a digital video disc) with video editing software or an animation program Digital video cameras can output usable video for use on the Web Most video or animation programs (Adobe Premiere, Windows Movie Maker, or Macromedia Director, for instance) can output movie files in standard video formats Video requires significant data compression to be useful on the Web and uses various compression engines (software) One problem with video is that the browser or player requires the same compression engine that the creator program used, and not all computers have access to all the different engines Even with compression, most video files require significant download time The most well-known proprietary multimedia software on the Web is by Macromedia Macromedia distributes its Flash players (plug-ins) aggressively, so many people have the ability to view Macromedia s multimedia formats Macromedia s principal formats are its movie and Flash (vector graphics) formats You can create Macromedia video movies and animations with audio by using either Macromedia Director or Macromedia Flash (See its web site at wwwmacromediacom for details) Although Shockwave was the dominant Web multimedia format, it has fallen by the wayside to Macromedia Flash
